Reports
background
34 pilots also traveled to the Italian GP despite the fact that only 24 participants would be admitted to the race. Since you ahead of the result of the Grand Prix of the Netherlands two weeks earlier identified unclear interpretation of the rules continue to a pre-qualification as the Grand Prix of Great Britain was first practiced, renounced, had during the regular training times on Friday and Saturday from all pilots 24 fastest to be determined who received a start authorization.
Niki Lauda traveled to Monza with a 21 point lead and thus had the opportunity to secure his second world title early, although three races still followed. However, his announcement to leave Scuderia Ferrari and to compete for Brabham in the following season caused more sensation .
Three Italian guest starters got the chance to make their Grand Prix debut this weekend. These were Bruno Giacomelli , who was provided with a third McLaren factory car, Giorgio Francia in a third factory Brabham and Lamberto Leoni , who took over the second Surtees TS19 instead of Vern Schuppan at the side of his compatriot Vittorio Brambilla .
The Swiss private team Jolly Club announced a modified Williams FW03 under the name Apollon Fly for Loris Kessel .
training
James Hunt took pole position for the fifth time this season and shared the front row with Carlos Reutemann . Jody Scheckter qualified third in front of his World Cup opponent Niki Lauda , who followed in fifth behind Mario Andretti and in front of Riccardo Patrese .
run
Behind Jody Scheckter, who took the lead, Clay Regazzoni turned into the first corner in second place after a remarkable start from seventh place. Hunt and Andretti followed, both of whom were able to overtake the Swiss again during the first lap. In the following lap, Reutemann and Lauda also succeeded, while Andretti took second place and from then on caught up with the leading Scheckter.
Andretti took the lead on lap 10 by overtaking Scheckter on the outside of the Parabolica . Aided by the technical failure of Scheckter on lap 24, Andretti kept the top position until the finish.
Lauda overtook his team-mate Reutemann on lap 35. This slipped a little later due to an oil trail left by Giacomelli's McLaren M23 as a result of an engine burst. The same thing happened to the patient who followed immediately.
After his second place, Niki Lauda was only one point missing to secure the world title, as Scheckter remained without points. Due to the previous announcement of the team change, the enthusiasm in the Ferrari team and among the fans was not comparable with winning the World Cup two years earlier in the same place.
