Reports
background
At the weekend, which between the Grand Prix of the Netherlands was and the twelfth World Championship race in Monza, took Stefan Bellof together with Thierry Boutsen for Porsche to a race of the World Sportscar Championship in the Belgian Spa-Francorchamps part. In the famous Eau Rouge curve, he collided with Jacky Ickx's car and had a fatal accident. As a result, his place at Tyrrell was initially not filled. During the same race, Jonathan Palmer had also had a serious accident at the wheel of a Porsche and was broken. The Zakspeed team then did not take part in the Italian GP.
Andrea de Cesaris , dismissed by team boss Guy Ligier , was replaced by Philippe Streiff . With the Haas (USA) team , a new racing team founded by the American Carl Haas entered for the first time. The 1980 world champion , Alan Jones , returned to Formula 1 behind the wheel of the car developed with Lola .
training
Ayrton Senna secured pole position in the Lotus 97T ahead of the two Williams drivers Keke Rosberg and Nigel Mansell . Nelson Piquet qualified for fourth place on the grid ahead of Alain Prost and Elio de Angelis .
run
Already during the first lap, both Williams drivers passed Senna and thus formed a one-two lead for the team. Prost also overtook Senna on the third lap and shortly afterwards came in second, as Mansell had to make a pit stop due to an electronic defect, which set him back almost two laps.
On the 17th lap, de Angelis, who had overtaken his team-mate Senna on the fifth lap, was ousted from third place by Niki Lauda . When he had to head for the pits on lap 26 due to a damaged front wing, de Angelis initially got the position back, but was overtaken by Senna a little later. At the top, too, positions changed several times between Rosberg and Prost, including a pit stop by the Williams driver. An engine failure on Rosberg's car finally brought Prost to the top on lap 45. He won ahead of Piquet, Senna and Surer. Due to the distance covered, Stefan Johansson was classified fifth ahead of Elio de Angelis, although he retired on the penultimate lap due to a lack of fuel.
