Reports
background
After two overseas races, which were left out in order to devote themselves to the further development of the car, the Zakspeed team returned to the field in time for the second part of the European season.
Tyrrell first launched a copy of the new 014 , which was equipped with a Renault turbo engine . The car was driven by Martin Brundle . So this weekend Stefan Bellof was the only driver who still had to compete with a conventional naturally aspirated Ford Cosworth engine .
The Renault works team also used a further developed car of the RE60B type , which had a new engine. Patrick Tambay drove the vehicle, while his teammate Derek Warwick continued to use the tried and tested version.
training
Ayrton Senna had to admit defeat to the winner of the US East Grand Prix , Keke Rosberg , in training this weekend . Behind the two, Michele Alboreto and Alain Prost qualified for the second row. It was followed by Nelson Piquet the fastest of with Pirelli -equipped tires pilots before Niki Lauda .
As a tire suddenly burst in the fast Signes corner, Nigel Mansell had a serious accident during the second qualifying session. He hit the post of a safety fence with his helmet and therefore decided not to take part in the rest of the race weekend.
All pilots qualified with an average speed of more than 200 km / h.
run
It was very hot on race day, which should prove to be an advantage for the Pirelli-equipped pilots. This was made clear, among other things, by the fact that Piquet got past Senna and Rosberg within the first ten laps and thus took over the lead, which he then defended to the finish.
After Senna retired due to an engine failure, Lauda, who had previously overtaken Elio de Angelis , took third place behind Rosberg. His team-mate Prost followed him in fourth place. This sequence remained constant until lap 30, when Lauda retired due to a gearbox failure and Prost took third place. On lap 39 he overtook Rosberg, who was slowing down due to deteriorating tires. In response, the Finn headed for the pits to have new tires fitted. This enabled him to catch up with Prost again and to take second place again on the last lap. Also in the last lap, Stefan Johansson passed Elio de Angelis and finished fourth ahead of him and Patrick Tambay.
Nelson Piquet, who had finished 16th in the drivers' standings with just one championship point before the race, moved up to seventh place thanks to his victory.
Nelson Piquet's win was Brabham's last win in Formula 1 history.
