The 1985 Australian Grand Prix took place on November 3rd as the 16th and final race of the 1985 Formula 1 World Championship on the Adelaide Street Circuit .
Reports
background
For the first time, an Australian Grand Prix was held as a Formula 1 World Championship round. The race took place on the then new street circuit in Adelaide.
Teams Renault and Ligier , who had boycotted the South African Grand Prix two weeks earlier in protest against the South African political system, were back at the start. Consequently, Philippe Streiff returned to his traditional Ligier team and left the cockpit at Tyrrell to Ivan Capelli .
Niki Lauda contested the last race of his career.
training
Ayrton Senna's seventh pole position of the season resulted from training . Nigel Mansell followed on the grid in front of his team mate Keke Rosberg and Alain Prost, who had been the new world champion for several weeks .
run
Mansell initially took the lead ahead of Senna. However, the two collided during the first lap, after which Mansell had to give up the race at the pits. Rosberg thus led before Senna. Behind it followed Michele Alboreto before Alain Prost, Gerhard Berger and Marc Surer .
Several drivers had problems with their tires and stopped to have them changed. As a result, there were several position changes in the leading group. Because he had violated the rules on the starting grid, Elio de Angelis was shown the black flag for disqualification.
On lap 18, Surer took third place from Prost, but lost that position again to the French on lap 25. However, when he was eliminated two laps later due to an engine failure, the Swiss came back in third place until he was eliminated on lap 42.
Rosberg and Senna dueled for the lead over several laps. When Rosberg was in front, Senna hit the rear of the car and lost his front wing. At first he tried to continue without it to avoid an additional pit stop. After two laps, however, he realized that this was hardly possible and had the wing on the box replaced. He came back on track in third place behind Rosberg and Lauda. On the 50th lap he overtook the Austrian. Rosberg made another pit stop to change tires on lap 53. This lasted longer than usual, so that he fell back to third place behind the new leaders Senna and Lauda.
On the 56th lap, Lauda pulled past Senna to the top. Instead of ending his racing career with a win, however, he retired two laps later due to a minor accident caused by a brake failure. When Senna retired on the 61st lap due to an engine failure, Rosberg finally took the lead. Behind him, the two Ligier drivers Jacques Laffite and Philippe Streiff reached the podium. Due to a misunderstanding, the two teammates collided on the penultimate lap, with Streiff's car losing the right front wheel. Then he finished the last lap on three wheels. Ivan Capelli, Stefan Johansson and Gerhard Berger received the last World Cup points of the 1985 season.
