The 1989 Australian Grand Prix took place on November 5th as the 16th and final race of the 1989 Formula 1 World Championship on the Adelaide Street Circuit .

Due to Ayrton Senna's disqualification after the Japanese Grand Prix , the World Championship was decided in favor of Alain Prost before the final race in Australia .
Pierluigi Martini took over the Minardi cockpit again, in which Paolo Barilla had made his Grand Prix debut in Japan two weeks earlier.

The two McLaren teammates Ayrton Senna and Alain Prost qualified for the front row in front of the once again impressive Pierluigi Martini. His compatriot Alessandro Nannini followed in front of the two Williams drivers Thierry Boutsen and Riccardo Patrese .

After two cool but dry days of training, it rained on the day of the race, which led to discussions about a cancellation. However, the decision was made in favor of the race.
After an accident and the subsequent termination of the race after two laps, world champion Alain Prost refused to take part in the restart because he found the massive visual obstruction caused by spray too dangerous. This assumption turned out to be correct when, for example, the leading Ayrton Senna drove into the car of Martin Brundle to be lapped, whom he had not seen in time. A similar accident occurred between Nelson Piquet and Piercarlo Ghinzani .
Thierry Boutsen drove without a mistake. When the race was stopped prematurely after the maximum duration of two hours, he won ahead of Alessandro Nannini, Riccardo Patrese, Satoru Nakajima , Emanuele Pirro and Pierluigi Martini.
