The 1989 Mexican Grand Prix took place in Mexico City on May 28 and was the fourth race of the 1989 Formula 1 World Championship .
Reports
background
Gerhard Berger , who was injured after a fire accident during the San Marino Grand Prix , returned to the field after a five-week recovery.
Minardi used the newly designed M189 for the first time .
training
Again the front row was formed by the two McLaren MP4 / 5s from Ayrton Senna and Alain Prost . Nigel Mansell and Ivan Capelli took the second row ahead of Riccardo Patrese and Gerhard Berger.
Only the first four pilots achieved average speeds of over 200 km / h on their fastest laps.
In the fourth attempt, Stefan Johansson succeeded for the first time in qualifying for a Grand Prix in an Onyx Ford .
run
Senna took the lead ahead of Mansell and Prost. At the end of the first lap, Stefano Modena spun , which subsequently led to a collision with Olivier Grouillard , Alex Caffi and Ivan Capelli. The race was then canceled with the red flag.
Senna won the restart again. This time, however, Prost followed in second place ahead of Berger and Mansell. The positions of the two Ferrari drivers changed on the sixth lap. When Prost had new tires fitted in the pit after 19 laps, Mansell took second place. Due to Berger's failure due to a hydraulic defect, Patrese had reached third place shortly before. When Mansell was eliminated in the 44th lap, the Italian finally finished second ahead of his two compatriots Michele Alboreto and Alessandro Nannini . Alain Prost, who finished fifth, was followed by another Italian in Gabriele Tarquini . This gave the AGS team the second and, as it turned out, the last championship point in team history. For himself it was the first and only point in Formula 1.
