Reports
background
Apart from the fact that Graham Hill was absent due to injury and John Miles took over the Lotus 63 again , which had been driven by Mario Andretti in the previous race , the same teams and drivers competed as at the US Grand Prix two weeks earlier. Even the start numbers of the vehicles remained unchanged, which was a rarity at the time.
training
The two works Brabham set the standards in training, especially team founder Jack Brabham , who secured pole position seven tenths of a second ahead of his team mate Jacky Ickx . World Champion Jackie Stewart and Denis Hulme shared the second row in front of a pure Lotus row consisting of Jo Siffert and Jochen Rindt .
run
For the second time in a row, Bruce McLaren's racing car failed before the start, ultimately causing 16 vehicles to enter the race.
Stewart had the best start that put him in front of Ickx and Brabham. Behind them, Hulme was able to overtake Rindt on the second lap and thus take fourth place. Meanwhile, Ickx increased the pressure on the leading Stewart. He passed on lap six, while Hulme pushed Brabham out of third. The two leaders were overtaken by Hulme in the following laps, so that he was in the lead from lap ten and defended this position to the finish. Meanwhile, Stewart fell back to fourth behind Brabham.
BRM regular driver Jackie Oliver secured his first and only championship point of the year in the last race of the season.
