Apart from the fact that Graham Hill was absent due to injury and John Miles took over the Lotus 63 again , which had been driven by Mario Andretti in the previous race , the same teams and drivers competed as at the US Grand Prix two weeks earlier. Even the start numbers of the vehicles remained unchanged, which was a rarity at the time.
For the second time in a row, Bruce McLaren's racing car failed before the start, ultimately causing 16 vehicles to enter the race.
Stewart had the best start that put him in front of Ickx and Brabham. Behind them, Hulme was able to overtake Rindt on the second lap and thus take fourth place. Meanwhile, Ickx increased the pressure on the leading Stewart. He passed on lap six, while Hulme pushed Brabham out of third.
