Georges-Francis "Johnny" Servoz-Gavin , (born January 18, 1942 in Grenoble , † May 29, 2006 ibid) was a French racing driver .

Career

Johnny Servoz-Gavin was after initial successes, which he in the 1960s with a private Brabham in the Formula 3 was achieved in 1966 in the factory team of Matra included automobiles, the Matra after the takeover of the automaker René Bonnet built. At first he drove with moderate success in Formula 2 , but was able to book his first Formula 1 start at the Monaco Grand Prix in 1967 and his best result in 1968 at the Italian Grand Prix with second place. Also in 1968, as a substitute driver for the injured Jackie Stewart , he was in the lead at the Monaco Grand Prix - until he hit a guardrail.

In 1969 he won the Formula 2 European Championship on a Matra MS7 and was also the driver of the new all-wheel drive Formula 1 racing car Matra MS84 , with which he scored one point for sixth place at the Canadian Grand Prix ; Incidentally, the only championship point that has ever been achieved with a four-wheel Formula 1 racing car. In 1970 he became a teammate of Jackie Stewart at Tyrrell , both of whom drove on March 701 - Cosworth .

After a recreational accident in an open off-road vehicle (in the winter of 1969/1970), in which he sustained an eye injury from a low-hanging branch that later restricted his vision, and the resulting failures, he ended surprisingly and relatively in mid-1970 early his racing career because he now often felt unsafe.

Servoz-Gavin later lived on a boat for years, where he was severely burned in a gas explosion in 1982. During the following operation, he was reported to have had three cardiac arrests, but the doctors saved him anyway.
