The 1982 Formula 2 European Championship was the 16th season of this 1967 established motorsport series . The championship consisted of 13 races held in Belgium, Germany, France, Great Britain, Italy and Sweden. The championship title went to Corrado Fabi , who competed for the works team of the British racing car manufacturer March Engineering . Johnny Cecotto was runner-up. Due to the deletion results, he was given one point less than Fabi.
overview
In the course of the season 24 teams with a total of 54 drivers registered. Eleven teams competed in all races of the championship, the rest only appeared in individual races, some of them even only in one race.
Teams and designers
This year vehicles from eight different chassis manufacturers drove: AGS , Lola , March, Maurer , Minardi , Ralt , Spirit and Toleman .
March, AGS, Maurer and Spirit had designed new models for the 1982 season, while Ralt and Minardi used revised models from the previous year. Minardi had started developing a new 282 car at the end of 1981, but stopped working again after a short time, which is partly attributed to the “confusing situation regarding the question of the soil effect”. Toleman no longer produced any new vehicles, but as in the previous year, Lola offered a licensed replica of the Toleman TG280 developed in 1980, which was called the Lola T850 . Docking Spitzley Racing revised two Lola T850s that had already been used in the previous year and now reported them as Docking Spitzley DS1 . In addition, several drivers brought some of the Toleman TG280s manufactured in 1980 to the start. Finally, the Italian team Merzario , which had designed its own cars in the previous year, used several March 822s in 1982, which, however, had been technically revised and were called March-Merzario 282s.
AGS, March, Maurer, Ralt, Minardi and Spirit maintained their own factory teams that used the latest chassis. March and Maurer also regularly sold their current models to customer teams. A March 822 started the season at £ 19,000. In addition, several drivers brought older models from March, Ralt and Minardi to the start. The conceptually oldest car was the Minardi GM75 from Brambilla Racing, which dates back to a March 792 from 1979.
The most successful car of the year was the March 822. Corrado Fabi and Johnny Cecotto won eight of 13 races with it for the March works team, which also used a works-supported engine from BMW . Thierry Boutsen scored three wins for Spirit and two Stefan Bellof for Maurer.
Engines
The four-cylinder engine from BMW (M12) was the most widely used power unit. The March works team exclusively received engines that had been prepared at the BMW factory; Based on their designer Paul Rosche , these versions were usually referred to as BMW Rosche. The other BMW teams mostly had their engines serviced by Heini Mader Racing Components in Switzerland or, in Maurer's case, by Max Heidegger in Liechtenstein. Their power was around 315 hp. Individual Italian teams also used older BMW engines with Osella tuning.
In addition to the BMW engine, the six-cylinder engine from Honda was successful: It was used in the works teams of Ralt and Spirit. They were considered to be the most powerful engines: observers estimated that they outperformed BMW engines by 20 to 30 hp.
The older Toleman and Lola models were mostly driven by Hart engines, which were based on a more than ten year old design by Ford and Cosworth and were no longer competitive. Occasionally they were also found in older Ralt constructions.
Minardi initially considered bringing Ferrari engines to the start on a regular basis . Initial tests before the start of the season, however, showed that the power output of the engines did not match that of the BMW and Honda engines. That is why Minardi used Mader-tuned BMW engines for its regular drivers again this year. The Ferrari six-cylinder ultimately only appeared in two races; the team did not reach any championship points with them.
driver
There have been numerous changes on the driver side compared to the 1981 season. Geoff Lees, the European champion of the 1981 season, was no longer given a cockpit in Formula 2 in 1982. He went to Japan in 1982, where he took part in the Japanese Formula 2 Championship , which he won in 1983. Thierry Boutsen , last year's runner-up, switched from the March to the Spirit works team, where Stefan Johansson (formerly Docking Spitzley) was also under contract. Johnny Cecotto , who in 1981 a. a. had driven at Minardi, joined the March factory team. Kenny Acheson moved from Docking Spitzley to Ralt. Eje Elgh , third in the 1981 championship, could no longer find a permanent cockpit in 1982 and only made two guest starts this year.
Some drivers who regularly competed in Formula 2 in 1981 switched to Formula 1 . They include Michele Alboreto , who signed with Tyrrell , as well as Manfred Winkelhock ( ATS ) and Ricardo Paletti ( Osella ).
In addition, some drivers made their Formula 2 debuts in 1982. The most notable debutant was the Giessen racing driver Stefan Bellof , who won his first two Formula 2 races with Maurer and led the drivers' championship for a month and a half. Due to some technical defects in his car, the series of successes did not continue in the course of the year; Bellof finished the season in fourth place in the championship.
The Japanese racing driver Satoru Nakajima , who led the Japanese Formula 2 Championship of the year, competed in selected European races. He drove a March last year that was equipped with a powerful Honda engine. With this combination, he finished second behind Bellof in the opening race at Silverstone .
On the other hand, numerous occasional pilots registered for selected races. One of them was Francesco Attaguile, a Sicilian notary who bought into Minardi's home race in Enna and went there under the pseudonym “Mr. Arriva ”started. Attaguile was disqualified in the first half of the race for driving too slowly.
Teams and drivers
Racing calendar
In 1982, 13 Formula 2 races took place: four in Italy, three each in Germany and Great Britain and one each in France, Belgium and Sweden. All races had championship status. Unlike in previous years, no further races without championship status were held in 1982.

The 6th Gran Premio dell'Adriatico was the last race of the season. It took place on August 7th at the Autodromo Santamonica in Misano Adriatico . The race went over 60 laps of 3.488 km each and had a total distance of 209.28 km. 12 teams with 24 drivers were registered for the race. 22 cars were allowed to race; Thierry Tassin ( Docking Spitzley ) and Severino Zampatti ( Sanremo Racing ) were eliminated in qualifying.
In this race the championship was decided. The two March factory drivers Johnny Cecotto (56 points) and Corrado Fabi (48 points) as well as Thierry Boutsen in the factory spirit still had a chance of winning the championship title . Fabi was on pole position. Before the start, a storm hit the track, which was then wet with rain. Spirit was the only one of the top teams to use rain tires, but the race management postponed the start until the track was dry in places. Fabi started on slicks and initially fell back to eighth place, while Boutsen temporarily took the lead. On the first lap, Bellof bumped into an attempt to overtake Cecotto, who then spun off the track and lost three laps while his car was being repaired. During the following laps the track continued to dry out. Fabi gradually moved to the front of the field, while Boutsen lost a lot of time due to the ultimately necessary switch to dry tires. Fabi won the race by four tenths of a second over Alessandro Nannini in the Minardi . He also won the championship one point ahead of Johnny Cecotto, who crossed the finish line in ninth place, four laps behind. It was the sixth Formula 2 championship that a driver won with a car from the March works team. After the race, there was an argument between Cecotto and Bellof.
