Grand Prix de Formule 2 Belgique
The Grand Prix de Formule 2 Belgique (German: Grand Formula 2 Prize of Belgium ) was an automobile racing event that was held in 1981 and 1982. In those years it was part of the Formula 2 European Championship .
background
Since the introduction of the Formula 2 European Championship in 1967, Belgium has repeatedly tried to host championship races. However, it was not initially established. Between 1967 and 1979 only five Formula 2 races took place in Belgium, each of which had different names ( Grote Prijs van Limborg , Grand Prix de l'Avenir , IGB Grand Prix ) and took place on different routes. Several races planned were canceled at short notice in the 1970s. It was not until 1980 that there was a certain regularity: Formula 2 championship races have now been held in Belgium for four consecutive years. In 1980 and 1983 these were the 17th and 29th Grote Prijs van Limborg in Zolder , while in 1981 and 1982 it was the Belgian Formula 2 Grand Prix, which had its first edition in 1981 and its last edition in 1982. The races took place on the circuit .
During these years there were also races for the Formula 1 World Championship in Belgium , which were called the Belgian Grand Prix . They took place in Zolder with a time lag.
In 1981 Geoff Lees , who became Formula 2 European Champion at the end of the year, won the Belgian Formula 2 Grand Prix; the following year victory went to Belgian Thierry Boutsen .
After the Formula 2 European Championship was replaced by the International Formula 3000 Championship in 1985 , Formula 3000 races were held on the Spa-Francorchamps circuit for a few years .
