Mike Thackwell (born March 30, 1961 in Auckland ) is a former New Zealand racing driver .

Career

At the start of the 1980 Canadian Grand Prix , at the age of 19, Thackwell was the youngest Formula 1 driver to date (before Ricardo Rodríguez ) to ever take part in a Formula 1 race. He was considered a great young talent, but his career was interrupted by a serious accident in which he sustained head injuries and a badly broken foot.

He took part in five Grand Prix, but was only able to take the qualification hurdle twice.

In 1983 he became vice-European champion in Formula 2 alongside Jonathan Palmer in the team on Ralt - Honda . 1984 he won the Formula 2 European Championship alongside Roberto Moreno in the team Ralt-Honda and was in the next year runner up in the successor series F3000 .

After he ended his motorsport career at the age of 26, he became a helicopter pilot on an oil rig. Today he lives in England and works as a teacher.
