The 1984 Canadian Grand Prix took place in Montreal on June 17 and was the seventh race of the 1984 Formula 1 World Championship .

Reports

background

At RAM Racing , regular driver Jonathan Palmer , who was taking part in the Le Mans 24-hour race , was represented by Mike Thackwell . Team Spirit Racing started with the Dutch debutant Huub Rothengatter instead of Mauro Baldi .

training

Although he sustained leg injuries two weeks earlier in a collision with his teammate Derek Warwick in the opening phase of the Monaco Grand Prix , Patrick Tambay was registered for the Canadian GP. However, during the first free practice session, he found that driving was causing him too much pain and therefore decided not to participate in the rest of the weekend.

Nelson Piquet secured pole position for the third time this season. This was followed by Alain Prost in front of Elio de Angelis and Derek Warwick. The two Ferrari pilots René Arnoux and Michele Alboreto were the third row ahead of Nigel Mansell and Niki Lauda .

run

The reigning world champion Nelson Piquet took the lead from pole and defended this position to the finish. In addition, he was able to record the fastest race lap and thus achieved a Grand Slam this weekend . However, it was also his first point result of the current season, so that a successful title defense was already questionable at this point.

Prost held second place until the 44th lap. But then he was overtaken by his team-mate Lauda, who had fought his way up to third place from eighth place to lap 14. De Angelis crossed the finish line in fourth ahead of Arnoux and Mansell.
