The 1984 US Grand Prix took place in Detroit on June 24th and was the eighth race of the 1984 Formula 1 World Championship .
Reports
background
Patrick Tambay , Jonathan Palmer and Teo Fabi returned to the field of participants for the Grand Prix of the USA East, which was held for the last time this year as one of two races in the USA .
training
After his superior victory in Canada , which he even achieved in the form of a Grand Slam , Nelson Piquet also qualified for pole position in Detroit, with a lap time that was almost seven tenths of a second shorter than Alain Prost . Nigel Mansell and Michele Alboreto formed the second row ahead of Elio de Angelis and Derek Warwick .
As it was found after the first run that the rear wing on Niki Lauda's McLaren MP4 / 2 was 2.5 millimeters too wide, his lap time was canceled. In the second round he qualified for tenth place on the grid.
run
Since Prost started a little better from second place than the pole-setter Piquet, who was a few meters in front of him, the two drove straight to the first corner. Mansell, who had also got off to a good start, tried to take the lead between the two. He touched Piquet's car. This turned into the wall that bordered the route. Marc Surer, who could not evade in time, crashed into the wreck at high speed. Meanwhile, a wheel torn off from Piquet's car damaged the suspension of Ayrton Senna, who was passing by at the moment . The race was canceled.
In contrast to Surer T-Cars, Piquet and Senna were available to participate in the restart. This time Piquet easily defended the lead against Prost, Mansell and Alboreto. Similar to before in Canada, he consistently led the race to the finish.
The two Tyrrell pilots Stefan Bellof and Martin Brundle once again made a strong impression, fighting their way up to fifth and sixth before their pit stops. They were only briefly thrown back by the stops. While Bellof was eliminated due to an accident on lap 34, Brundle crossed the finish line in second behind Piquet. This was facilitated, among other things, by the fact that Alboreto was eliminated and de Angelis fell behind due to technical problems. With Teo Fabi, Alain Prost and Jacques Laffite only three other drivers made it to the finish.
When the Tyrrell team was banned from the World Championship towards the end of the season, all pilots who had reached the finish line after Martin Brundle moved up for one place. However, since no other driver had crossed the finish line after Jacques Laffite, no one later made it into the points. A World Championship point for sixth place was therefore not awarded this weekend because Michele Alboreto, who was the last to retire, had completed too few laps to be classified as sixth.
By completing the fastest race lap, Derek Warwick prevented Nelson Piquet from scoring a Grand Slam for the second time in a row.
