background
Since the refueling practiced by most teams in the 1983 season was viewed by those responsible as too dangerous during the races, a corresponding ban was issued before the new season. In addition, the maximum amount of fuel in the cars was limited to 220 liters per race, which posed problems in particular for the teams with fuel-intensive turbo engines that are now in excess.
Teams Williams , Lotus , ATS and Arrows each retained the driver line-ups with which they had completed the 1983 season.
John Watson , who at the end of 1983 had speculated that all well-known drivers were bound by contract, demanded a raise from McLaren team boss Ron Dennis , with which he did not agree. When Renault surprisingly announced the separation from Alain Prost , he was finally signed instead of Watson, who then did not receive a cockpit for the 1984 season. The second Renault team driver last year, Eddie Cheever , Renault had left and was new team-mate Riccardo Patrese at Alfa Romeo , where next to the former Brabham pilots also Benetton , the former main sponsor of Tyrrell , had been contracted. Patrick Tambay and Derek Warwick then became the new Renault regular drivers.
Tambay's former place alongside René Arnoux at Ferrari was taken by Michele Alboreto . Its previous team, Tyrrell, then completely reorganized itself with the two debutants Stefan Bellof and Martin Brundle . After Bruno Giacomelli left Toleman in addition to Derek Warwick , this team also needed two new drivers. They chose Johnny Cecotto and Formula 1 newcomer Ayrton Senna .
Ligier started with Renault turbo engines. In addition, a new main sponsor and the two drivers Andrea de Cesaris and François Hesnault have been hired. RAM Racing also changed the engine supplier. The decision was made in favor of four-cylinder turbo engines from Hart . Jonathan Palmer and newcomer Philippe Alliot were signed as drivers . Teo Fabi became the new teammate of the reigning world champion Nelson Piquet at Brabham.
Only Tyrrell, Williams, Arrows and Toleman contested the season opener exclusively with vehicles from the previous year, with the Williams FW09 only being used at the 1983 season finale and thus representing a relatively new design.
training
Elio de Angelis qualified for pole position in the new Lotus 95T ahead of Michele Alboreto in the Ferrari 126C4 . Derek Warwick and Alain Prost took the second row ahead of Nigel Mansell and Niki Lauda .
Manfred Winkelhock was disqualified because mechanics had illegally pushed his car into the pits after it had broken down on the track during qualifying training.
run
The first attempt to start had to be aborted due to a power failure. The second attempt was also unsuccessful, as Andrea de Cesaris blocked the track due to a defective shift linkage. Only the third attempt was successful, with de Cesaris starting out of the pit lane in a T-Car .
As de Angelis and Prost did not get off to a good start, Alboreto was in the lead after the first lap, ahead of Warwick, Mansell and Lauda. Nelson Piquet stalled his engine and had to rush behind the field.
Lauda overtook several opponents one after the other, with his car and Warwick's car touching slightly. In the twelfth lap, the Austrian took the lead ahead of Warwick, Mansell, Tambay and Prost, benefiting from a spin Alboretos. From the 24th lap, Prost Lauda's lead added a McLaren double lead. It stayed that way until the pit stops, where only the tires were changed due to the refueling ban. Lauda retired during his stop due to an electrical problem. Prost's stop didn't go smoothly either, so Warwick took the lead.
On the 51st lap, Warwick spun out when a wheel suspension broke. It was a late consequence of the slight collision with Lauda at the beginning of the race. Tambay, who was in second place at the time, had to drive in a fuel-efficient manner and was therefore willing to be overtaken by Keke Rosberg . Nevertheless, two laps before the end of the race he was left with an empty tank. Thus Prost won ahead of Rosberg and de Angelis. Cheever and Brundle took fourth and fifth place. Tambay was classified in sixth due to the distance covered.
When the Tyrrell team was banned from the World Championship towards the end of the season, all pilots who had reached the finish line after Martin Brundle moved up for one place. Thierry Boutsen subsequently received a World Championship point.
