The 2012 Brazilian Grand Prix took place on November 25th at the Autódromo José Carlos Pace in São Paulo and was the 20th and final race of the 2012 Formula 1 World Championship .

Reports

background

After the US Grand Prix , Sebastian Vettel led the drivers' standings with 13 points ahead of Fernando Alonso and 67 points over Kimi Räikkönen . In the constructors' championship, Red Bull-Renault led by 73 points over Ferrari and 87 points over McLaren-Mercedes . Red Bull-Renault has been the constructors' world champion since the US Grand Prix.

In order for Fernando Alonso to catch up on Sebastian Vettel in the drivers' championship and become world champion, one of the following race results had to occur:

  • If Alonso won, Vettel was only allowed to finish fifth. If Alonso had won and Vettel had placed fourth, both drivers would have tied on points, and in this case the number of race wins (five for Vettel, four for Alonso) would have made the difference.
  • With a second place from Alonso, Vettel could reach a maximum of 8th place.
  • With a third place from Alonso, Vettel could reach a maximum of 10th place. Vettel's 9th place would also have resulted in a tie on points, in which Vettel would have had an advantage.

At the Brazilian Grand Prix, Pirelli will provide drivers with the tire compounds P Zero Hard (silver) and P Zero Medium (white) as well as Cinturato Intermediates (green) and Cinturato Full Wets (blue) for wet conditions . In the first free practice session, the drivers also received two sets of tires from a prototype for the 2013 season .

With Michael Schumacher (four times), Felipe Massa , Mark Webber (twice each), Räikkönen and Vettel (once each), five former winners will compete in this Grand Prix.

The race stewards are Silvia Bellot (ESP), Garry Connelly (AUS), Felipe Giaffone (BRA) and Tom Kristensen (DEN).

training

In the first free practice, Lewis Hamilton set the fastest time ahead of Vettel and Webber. In this training Valtteri Bottas took over the Williams from Bruno Senna and Giedo van der Garde took over the Caterham from Heikki Kovalainen . In the second free practice session, the first three positions remained unchanged. In the third free practice session, another McLaren driver, Jenson Button, took the lead in front of the Red Bull drivers Vettel and Webber.

Qualifying

It had rained before qualifying, so the track was wet to varying degrees at the beginning of qualifying. However, it was so dry that the drivers drove the fastest laps on slicks. Hamilton was the fastest pilot. The HRT , Marussia and Caterham pilots and Romain Grosjean were eliminated. Grosjean was also noticeable in this section due to a slight contact with Pedro de la Rosa on the start-finish curve, where Grosjean damaged his front wing. The race stewards judged this contact as a racing accident and did not impose any sanctions. In the second section, Vettel drove the fastest lap. The Toro Rosso and Sauber pilots as well as Schumacher, Senna and Paul di Resta were eliminated. In the third segment, Hamilton regained the lead and secured pole position ahead of Button and Webber.

On the starting grid, Pastor Maldonado was moved ten and de la Rosa five positions back - Maldonado due to a third warning, this time for missing a check weighing. De la Rosa received the starting place penalty for having changed his gearbox prematurely. Since he was in last place, the penalty had no effect.

The aspirants for the drivers' world championship Vettel and Alonso got the starting positions four and seven.

run

Before the race, which was Schumacher's last, he drove onto the grid with a flag that read "Thank you".

The race started on a slightly damp track. The pilots all used slicks. While the two McLaren drivers won the start and drove up front without changing positions, there were several duels and postponements behind them. Vettel already lost a few positions in the first corner and fell behind, among other things, behind the two Ferrari drivers who started well. In Descida do Lago , Vettel braked too early. While Raikkonen was still evading, Senna slipped on the inside of the curve in Vettel and turned him around. Even Sergio Pérez was hit by Senna. While Senna and Pérez were eliminated immediately, Vettel followed the field with a damaged left underbody and exhaust. Senna and Vettel saw the blame for this collision on the other pilot. One lap later, Senna's team-mate Maldonado also slipped off the track. Maldonado drove over a wet notch and came to a halt in the piles of tires.

On the second lap, Alonso passed Massa and Webber at the same time to take third position before the first corner. The rain increased a little over the next few laps, making the track more and more slippery. On the fifth lap he braked before the first corner and lost a position to Nico Hülkenberg . But he stayed ahead of Webber, who was soon overtaken by Massa.

While Webber then spun off the track and lost positions, Grosjean retired after an accident in the Mergulho . His vehicle suddenly oversteered with cold tires. At the top, a duel between Hamilton and Button developed in parallel, in which Button initially only briefly passed Hamilton. In the eighth round, Button finally passed Hamilton.

Over the next few laps, some drivers decided to switch to intermediate tires as it got wetter and wetter. Of the leading drivers, only Button and Hülkenberg, who came in second position, did without a switch to intermediates.

In the 18th lap there was a change in leadership at the top and Hülkenberg took the lead in a Formula 1 race for the first time. In the meantime, Vettel had almost completely reduced his deficit on Alonso and was one position behind him in fifth position. Shortly afterwards, all the pilots who had switched to intermediates began to switch back to slicks because the rain had not stopped and the track was drier again. Button and Hülkenberg had made the right decision by not changing and were about 45 seconds ahead of third-placed Hamilton.

In the 23rd the safety car came out because some parts were on the track and shortly before Nico Rosberg had damaged a tire when driving over a part. Button and Hülkenberg use the safety car phase for a pit stop and switched to the harder tire compound. The lapped pilots were given the opportunity to return to the leading lap, as they were allowed to overtake the safety car.

At the restart, the first four positions at the top remained unchanged. Vettel lost his fifth place to Kamui Kobayashi , who passed both Webber and Vettel in the S do Senna . While Hülkenberg initially retained the top position, Hamilton passed Button one lap after the restart and Alonso lost fourth place to Kobayashi shortly afterwards. However, Alonso managed to drive past Kobayashi again shortly afterwards. In the meantime, Vettel lost another place because Massa overtook him. Shortly afterwards, Massa also passed Kobayashi.

While the rain picked up again, Hamilton passed Hulkenberg, who was slipping slightly, on lap 48 and took the lead. The first drivers switched to intermediates during this racing phase. Vettel also pitted, but he decided to stay on slicks. In the 54th round there was a strange scene with Raikkonen in the center. Räikkönen turned off the track and tried to drive back onto the track behind the track barrier over the old lane. However, the way back to the track was blocked by a gate, so he turned around and drove back onto the track behind the boundary. After the race, Raikkonen stated that he had discovered the route over the old track at the 2001 Brazilian Grand Prix and that the gate was still open at the time.

On the 55th lap, Hulkenberg attacked Hamilton in front of the first corner. In the process, he lost the car and slipped into Hamilton. While Hulkenberg drove on and was subsequently given a drive-through penalty for causing a collision, Hamilton retired with a broken suspension. His team-mate Button took over the lead of the race.

In the next few laps, the pilots pitted to switch to intermediates. Vettel, whose stop did not go optimally, fell out of the points as a result, while Alonso moved up to third place and shortly afterwards was admitted to second place by his team-mate Massa. Vettel made it to sixth place in the final phase of the race. His last overtaking maneuver was against Schumacher.

In the 66th lap, the duel for eleventh place saw a decisive change in position for the constructors' world championship. Vitaly Petrov passed Charles Pic and finally reached the finish line in eleventh place. This made Petrov the best pilot to score no points and Caterham overtook Marussia in the world championship.

Shortly before the end of the race, di Resta had an accident in the Arquibancadas and triggered a safety car phase. Di Resta was injured and left the car on her own.

The race ended under yellow flags and Button won ahead of Alonso, Massa, Webber and Hulkenberg. Vettel, who crossed the finish line in sixth place, was enough to win his third world title. Vettel became the youngest pilot to succeed and, after Juan Manuel Fangio and Michael Schumacher, the third pilot to win three world titles in a row. Grand Prix winner Button confessed after the race that he had initially considered Alonso to be the world champion, as he had assumed that Vettel would have been eliminated at the beginning of the race.

The remaining points went to Schumacher, Jean-Éric Vergne , Kobayashi and Raikkonen.

In the world championship, Alonso finished second, three points behind. Although he had already won two world titles, he described the 2012 season as the best season of his career after the race. Raikkonen came third. The first positions among the constructors remained unchanged, with Ferrari taking second and McLaren-Mercedes third behind Red Bull-Renault.
