The HRT F112 is a racing car from the Spanish Formula 1 team HRT . It was used in the 2012 Formula One season and was driven by Pedro de la Rosa and Narain Karthikeyan .

Development history

The HRT F112 is the third car from the HRT team (formerly: Hispania Racing F1 Team). It was created in a time of upheaval. While HRT relied largely on the logistical support of Colin Kolles for the construction and use of its racing cars in 2010 and 2011 , the team, after parting with Kolles in December 2011, had to develop the car for the 2012 season drive alone. The development phase coincided with the move of the team, which had to set up a new team headquarters in Spain at the turn of the year 2011/2012 under the direction of Luis Pérez-Sala . The team management recognized early on that this double burden would have a detrimental effect on the competitiveness of the new car, and in December 2011 expressed the expectation that the HRT F112 would be even greater than in 2011.

technology

The new HRT F112 was designed by Jackie Eeckelart and Stephane Chosse . Most of the development work for the HRT F112 took place in an engineering office in Munich run by Eeckelart. When building the car, HRT made extensive use of the services of external suppliers.

The HRT F112 was a further development of the HRT F110 designed by Dallara in 2009 . According to press reports, the chassis was still identical to that of the F110. In the opinion of observers, essential body parts were identical to the previous vehicles. The only new feature was a stepped vehicle nose, which roughly corresponded to the designs that were seen on the vehicles of other teams in 2012. The engine cover has also been redesigned.

As in previous years, HRT used an eight-cylinder engine from Cosworth as the drive source , which was viewed as reliable but inefficient and, apart from HRT, was only used by the Marussia rival team . The power was transmitted via a transmission which HRT obtained from Williams . The rear axle was also designed by Williams. As with all other teams, the tires were provided by Pirelli . Like Marussia, HRT refrained from using KERS in 2012 .

The HRT F112 was built at Holzer Motorsport in Augsburg . Numerous individual parts such as the pedals, the steering column and the cable harness were also created here. The carbon fiber components, on the other hand, were designed by Carbo Tech in Austria.

The HRT F112 was perceived by observers as a "primitive", outdated design. The technique is very simple, but problematic. At the Australian Grand Prix the F112 had significant cooling problems; the car overheated quickly. The team expected thermal problems at the pit stops for the Malaysian Grand Prix , but was able to finish the race with both cars.

idea

The completion of the HRT F112 was delayed until March 2012 because the car did not pass essential crash tests that took place in February 2012 and accordingly some improvements had to be made. As a result, HRT was unable to take part in the official test drives with the F112 that were held at the Circuit de Catalunya in Barcelona in February and March 2012 .

Regardless of these delays, HRT succeeded in 2012 - unlike in the two previous years - in presenting the current vehicle to the public two weeks before the first race of the season. The presentation took place on March 5, 2012 in Barcelona. De la Rosa and Karthikeyan shot a few demonstration rounds as part of advertising, which also served as a functional test. The team received little information about the car, as the laps were completed on demonstration tires that have little resemblance to racing tires.

Painting and sponsorship

The HRT F112 was painted white and had accent stripes in red and gold. With that, the team used a new color scheme again in its third season. There were very few sponsor stickers on the vehicle. The side pods and the engine cover were completely or largely free of sponsors. As in the previous year, one of the few sponsors was the Indian Tata group .
