The 2012 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix took place on November 4th at the Yas Marina Circuit on Yas Island and was the 18th race of the 2012 Formula 1 World Championship .

Reports

background

After the Indian Grand Prix , Sebastian Vettel led the drivers' standings with 13 points ahead of Fernando Alonso and 67 points over Kimi Raikkonen . In the constructors' championship, Red Bull-Renault led by 91 points over Ferrari and 101 points over McLaren-Mercedes .

At the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, Pirelli provided the drivers with the tire compounds P Zero Medium (white) and P Zero Soft (yellow) as well as Cinturato Intermediates (green) and Cinturato Full Wets (blue) for wet conditions .

With Vettel (twice) and Lewis Hamilton (once) all previous winners competed in this Grand Prix.

The race stewards were Radovan Novak (CZE), Lars Österlind (SWE), Khaled Bin Shaiban (ARE) and Derek Warwick (GBR).

training

In the first practice session, Hamilton set the fastest time in front of his teammates Jenson Button and Vettel. In this session Max Chilton , who took over the Marussia from Charles Pic in this session , was used for the first time at a Grand Prix weekend. In addition, took Jules Bianchi the Force India of Paul di Resta , Valtteri Bottas the Williams of Bruno Senna , Giedo van der Garde the Caterham of Vitaly Petrov and Qing Hua Ma the HRT of Narain Karthikeyan . In the second free practice Vettel was fastest ahead of Hamilton and Button. In the third free practice, Hamilton set the fastest time ahead of Button and Vettel.

Qualifying

In the first section of qualifying, Hamilton drove the fastest lap. The HRT, Marussia and Caterham pilots and Jean-Éric Vergne were eliminated. In the second segment, Hamilton stayed ahead. The Force India and Sauber pilots as well as Daniel Ricciardo , Michael Schumacher and Senna were eliminated. In the third part, Hamilton maintained the top position and secured pole position in front of Webber and Vettel.

Vettel did not make it back to the parc fermé and parked his vehicle on the direction of the team at the edge of the track. At this point in time, only 0.85 liters of fuel could be removed from the vehicle for examination. Article 6.6.2 of the regulations stipulates, however, that a vehicle must be able to return to the pit on its own after training and that it must also be possible to take at least one liter of fuel from the tank. Since this was not the case with Vettel, he was, like Hamilton in qualifying for the Spanish Grand Prix 2012 , taken out of the qualifying by the race stewards. However, he was allowed to start from 24th place on the grid. Red Bull decided to withdraw Vettel's vehicle from the parc fermé due to the exclusion from the classification and the last starting place. For this reason, Vettel had to start from the pit lane. However, his team has now been allowed to change all vehicle settings.

Race course

Kimi Raikkonen won the race ahead of Alonso and Vettel. It was Raikkonen's first win of the season and the first win for the Lotus team under the direction of Genii Capital .

Until his technical retirement, Hamilton led the race. Then Raikkonen took the lead and held it until the end of the race. Vettel, who started out of the pits, showed some overtaking maneuvers and benefited from two safety car phases . Despite a repair stop because of a damaged front wing , he drove up to third place.
