Reports

background

The US Grand Prix returned to the Formula 1 calendar in 2012. The Circuit of The Americas was created under the direction of Hermann Tilke . The last US Grand Prix took place in 2007 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway .

After the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix , Sebastian Vettel led the drivers' standings with 10 points ahead of Fernando Alonso and 57 points over Kimi Raikkonen . In the constructors' championship, Red Bull-Renault led by 82 points over Ferrari and 104 points over McLaren-Mercedes . Vettel and Red Bull-Renault have the chance to win the world title in their category at the Grand Prix.

At the US Grand Prix, Pirelli provided the drivers with the tire compounds P Zero Hard (silver) and P Zero Medium (white) as well as Cinturato Intermediates (green) and Cinturato Full Wets (blue) for wet conditions .

With Michael Schumacher (five times) and Lewis Hamilton (once) two former winners competed for this Grand Prix.

The race stewards were José Abed (MEX), Garry Connelly (AUS), Emerson Fittipaldi (BRA) and Tim Mayer (USA).

training

In the first practice session, the track was initially slippery and had little grip. Vettel was the fastest driver ahead of Hamilton and Alonso. In this training Qing Hua Ma took over the HRT from Narain Karthikeyan . In the second free practice session, Vettel maintained the lead in front of his teammates Mark Webber and Alonso. In the third free practice too, Vettel stayed ahead. Hamilton finished second ahead of Pastor Maldonado .

Qualifying

In the first section of qualifying, Vettel was the fastest driver. The HRT, Caterham and Marussia pilots as well as Daniel Ricciardo were eliminated. In the second segment, Vettel stayed ahead. The Sauber pilots as well as Nico Rosberg , Jean-Éric Vergne , Paul di Resta , Jenson Button and Bruno Senna were eliminated. In the third segment, Vettel kept the lead and secured pole position from Hamilton and Webber.

On the grid, Romain Grosjean and Felipe Massa were each moved five positions back due to a gear change. The gearbox on the Massa racing car was not changed, only the FIA seal was damaged. Ferrari decided to take this action to move Alonso up one position on the "clean" home page.

run

Hamilton won the race ahead of Vettel and Alonso.

Vettel kept the lead at the start and initially led the race. With an overtaking maneuver in the second half of the race, Hamilton managed to overtake Vettel. He kept the lead until the finish.

While the drivers 'world championship remained open, Red Bull-Renault secured the constructors' world championship.
