The 2013 USA Grand Prix (officially 2013 Formula 1 United States Grand Prix ) took place on November 17th at the Circuit of The Americas in Austin and was the 18th race of the 2013 Formula 1 World Championship .

Reports

background

After the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix , Sebastian Vettel led the drivers' championship with 130 points ahead of Fernando Alonso and 164 points ahead of Kimi Räikkönen . Red Bull-Renault led in the constructors' championship with 179 points ahead of Mercedes and 190 points ahead of Ferrari . Vettel and Red Bull-Renault were already established as world champions ahead of time.

At Lotus there was a driver change for health reasons. After suffering from severe back pain for a long time, Raikkonen decided to have an operation that ended his season prematurely. Lotus initially submitted an offer to Sauber driver Nico Hülkenberg for the last two races of the season in 2013; However, Hulkenberg declined this offer after Sauber paid part of Hulkenberg's outstanding salary. Heikki Kovalainen eventually got the cockpit, moving from Caterham to Lotus. He was a test driver at Caterham in 2013 and had participated in free practice six times - most recently in Abu Dhabi. Kovalainen last raced at the 2012 Brazilian Grand Prix for Caterham.

At the US Grand Prix, Pirelli provided the drivers with the tire compounds P Zero Hard (orange) and P Zero Medium (white) as well as Cinturato Intermediates (green) and Cinturato Full Wets (blue) for wet conditions .

With Lewis Hamilton (twice) a former winner competed at this Grand Prix.

The race stewards were José Abed (MEX), Paul Gutjahr (SUI), Nigel Mansell (GBR) and Tim Mayer (USA).

training

Due to fog, the first free training started late and was shortened to 60 minutes. Since there was no rescue helicopter on the route, the training should not have started, but it was only noticed after 15 minutes, whereupon the training was interrupted. After the rescue helicopter finally got there, there were about 31 minutes left. Alonso was the fastest driver ahead of Jenson Button and Valtteri Bottas . Daniil Kwjat took over the Toro Rosso from Jean-Éric Vergne in this training session and was used for the first time on a Formula 1 weekend. In addition, Alexander Rossi took over the Caterham from Giedo van der Garde and Rodolfo González took over the Marussia from Jules Bianchi . In the second free practice session, Vettel took the lead from Mark Webber and Nico Rosberg .

In the third free practice session, Vettel stayed ahead of Webber. Hamilton took third position.

Qualifying

In the first section of qualifying Bottas was the fastest driver. Adrian Sutil stopped in the final phase with a brake defect. He failed to jump into the next part of the timed practice. Alongside him, the Marussia and Caterham pilots and Pastor Maldonado were eliminated. In the second segment, Vettel took the lead. The Toro Rosso pilots as well as Felipe Massa , Rosberg, Button and Paul di Resta were eliminated. In the final section, Vettel stayed in front and achieved the 44th pole position of his career ahead of Webber and Romain Grosjean .

Charles Pic was moved five positions down due to a gearbox change, and Button was moved three positions back on the grid due to overtaking under red flags in the first free practice. Esteban Gutiérrez was moved ten places down due to a blocking maneuver against Maldonado in the first qualifying segment. Max Chilton was given a drive-through penalty for the race, also for blocking, which he has to complete within the first five laps.

run

Vettel won the race ahead of Grosjean and Webber. Vettel led the race consistently after adjusting for pit stops.

It was Vettel's eighth straight win in one season. With that he set a new record of consecutive victories within one season.
