The McLaren MP4-28 was the Formula 1 - racing cars , the British Motorsport Team Vodafone McLaren Mercedes in the Formula 1 World Championship 2013 began. The car was presented on January 31, 2013 in Woking .

Technology and development

The MP4-28 was the successor to the MP4-27 from 2012. The car developed by Paddy Lowe was, like most other vehicles of the 2013 season, a further development of the predecessor; with the McLaren however, the changes were more profound than with the vehicles of the competition. Compared to its predecessor, the MP4-28 had a higher front and hid the resulting "nasal hump" through the newly introduced vanity panel . The raised nose of the car created more space for improved airflow under the car. In addition, the front suspension worked with tension struts instead of compression struts, which lowered the center of gravity in the front area of the car and ensured that the airflow from the front wing could be better used. The side pods, which were moved further to the rear, also improved the air flow in the rear area. On the rear wheels, the drive shaft and wishbone were now combined in one element.

The MP4-28 was powered by a V8 engine called Mercedes-Benz FO 108F with a displacement of 2.4 liters, which developed an output of around 550 kW (around 750 hp). The KERS was an in-house development by Mercedes, the brakes came from Akebono, the rims from Enkei , and the tires were provided by the standard supplier Pirelli .

Like all Formula 1 vehicles of the 2013 season, the MP4-28 was equipped with KERS and DRS .

Painting and sponsorship

The MP4-28 was chrome colored. The side pods and the parts of the front and rear wing were painted red based on the main sponsor Vodafone . Further sponsor stickers came from Mobil 1 , Hugo Boss and TAG Heuer .

driver

Jenson Button stayed with McLaren. His new team-mate was the former Sauber driver Sergio Pérez , who joined the team as the successor to Lewis Hamilton .

2013 season

The season was bad for the McLaren team. The MP4-28 showed deficits in the first races of the year. McLaren team boss Martin Whitmarsh was quoted as saying, "There is no evidence that anything is wrong with the car". In the first half of the season, the McLaren drove only in midfield. In July 2013, Whitmarsh announced that it would stop the development of the MP4-28 in order to concentrate fully on the development of the vehicle for 2014 .

After the tires for the Hungarian Grand Prix were brought up to the level of the previous season by Pirelli, McLaren stabilized and regularly drove into the points with both drivers. At the last race of the season, the Brazilian Grand Prix, Button achieved the best result of the season for the team with fourth place. After winning seven races last year , for the first time since 1980 no McLaren driver achieved a podium finish. At the end of the season, McLaren finished fifth in the Constructors' World Championship.

In retrospect, Sergio Pérez described the MP4-28 as one of the worst racing cars of its career.
