The 2013 Canadian Grand Prix (officially Formula 1 Grand Prix du Canada 2013 ) took place on June 9th at Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve in Montreal and was the seventh race of the 2013 Formula 1 World Championship .

Reports

backgrounds

After the Monaco Grand Prix , Sebastian Vettel led the drivers' standings with 21 points from Kimi Räikkönen and 29 points from Fernando Alonso . Red Bull-Renault led the constructors' championship with 41 points ahead of Ferrari and with 52 points ahead of Lotus-Renault .

At the Canadian Grand Prix, Pirelli will provide drivers with the tire compounds P Zero Medium (white) and P Zero Supersoft (red) as well as Cinturato Intermediates (green) and Cinturato Full Wets (blue) for wet conditions .

With Lewis Hamilton (three times), Raikkonen, Alonso and Jenson Button (once each), four former winners will compete in this Grand Prix.

The race stewards were Garry Connelly (AUS), Martin Donnelly (GBR), Mike Kaerne (CAN) and Radovan Novak (CZE).

training

The free practice took place under wet conditions. Paul di Resta set the fastest time there, ahead of Jenson Button and Romain Grosjean . In the second free practice session the track was dry. Alonso set the fastest time there, ahead of Hamilton and Grosjean. Mark Webber finished the third free practice with the fastest time ahead of Adrian Sutil and Hamilton.

Qualifying

The track was wet at the beginning of qualifying, but then dried out steadily. The best times, however, were set with the intermediates.

Sebastian Vettel set the fastest time in the first section of qualifying. The Caterham and Marussia pilots as well as Romain Grosjean and Paul di Resta were eliminated. The second segment was interrupted just under two minutes before the end because Felipe Massa lost control of his vehicle and hit the lane. The rest of the time was only enough for a timed lap, during which some drivers improved. Massa, Esteban Gutierrez , Button, Pastor Maldonado , Sergio Perez and Nico Hülkenberg were eliminated.

In the third section, Vettel again set the fastest lap and secured his 39th pole position of his career. Lewis Hamilton was second fastest, ahead of Valtteri Bottas .

Following qualifying, Kimi Räikkönen and Daniel Ricciardo were each put back two places because they had not parked their vehicles properly during the second qualifying session.

run

Vettel won the race ahead of Alonso and Hamilton. While Vettel always had a bigger lead over his rivals, there were some overtaking maneuvers in the rest of the field.

After the end of the race, an accident occurred while the Sauber was being transported back from Gutiérrez, in which a marshal was fatally injured. The marshal was run over by the tractor that was supposed to bring Gutiérrez's vehicle back into the pit lane and succumbed to his injuries a little later in hospital. It was the first death on a Formula 1 weekend since the 2001 Australian Grand Prix . A marshal was also killed at that time.
