Career

Pérez took part in the Skip Barber National Championship in 2004 and was eleventh there overall. In 2005 he switched to 4speed Media in the German Formula BMW and was fourth overall. In 2006 Pérez also competed in the German Formula BMW and was sixth in the overall standings for the ADAC Berlin-Brandenburg team . He also took part in two races in the A1GP series for the Mexican team in the winter of 2006/2007 . In 2007 Pérez switched to T-Sport in the British Formula 3 Championship and was champion of the national class with 14 wins in 21 races. In 2008 he was promoted to the international class of the British Formula 3 championship and, again competing for T-Sport , reached fourth place in the overall standings at the end of the season with four wins from 20 races.
GP2 series (2008-2010)
In the GP2 Asia Series season 2008/2009 , Pérez drove alongside Vitaly Petrow for Campos Grand Prix . After Pérez celebrated his first GP2 victory in the sprint race in Sakhir , he also showed a good performance at the next race weekend in Losail : After finishing second in the main race, Pérez won the sprint race ahead of his teammate Petrov . At the end of the season, Pérez finished seventh overall. With 26 to 28 points he narrowly defeated Petrov.
In 2009 Pérez also took part in the main series of GP2 . Together with Edoardo Mortara , he competed for Arden International . Despite not winning a race, he showed solid performances in his debut season. In Valencia , he was third in the main race and second in the sprint race for the first time on the podium and finished twelfth overall at the end of the season. Internally, he prevailed against Mortara with 22 to 19 points.
For the 2010 GP2 series , Pérez returned to the Barwa Addax Team , the successor team to Campos Grand Prix . His teammate was Giedo van der Garde from the Netherlands . Pérez had already driven half of the 2009/2010 GP2 Asia Series season for Barwa Addax and finished 15th in the overall standings. In the regular GP2 series, Pérez won his first race in the GP2 series at the prestigious race in Monte Carlo . With further victories at Silverstone , Hockenheim , Spa-Francorchamps and on Yas Island , he won a total of five races. At the end of the season he was runner- up behind Pastor Maldonado and was also the driver with the second-most wins. In November 2010 he completed his first Formula 1 test for Sauber .
Formula 1 (since 2011)
Clean (2011-2012)
- 2011
In 2011 he competed in Formula 1 for the Sauber team. He also received a sponsorship contract with Ferrari . In his first race, the Australian Grand Prix , Pérez crossed the finish line in seventh place. He was the only driver who used a one-stop strategy and drove 35 laps with a soft set of tires. Since the technical inspection after the race found illegal rear wings on both cleaners, both pilots were disqualified. In the fifth race, the Spanish Grand Prix , he finally scored his first Formula 1 points in ninth place.
In qualifying for the Monaco Grand Prix , Pérez had a serious accident. As he left the tunnel, he lost control of his vehicle, turned and hit the side wall of the harbor chicane. Pérez remained conscious and was taken to a hospital. Pérez suffered a concussion and a sprain in his thigh. He had to cancel the start of the Grand Prix. At the following Grand Prix in Canada , Pérez complained of nausea after the first free practice and was replaced by Pedro de la Rosa for the rest of the race weekend . At the British Grand Prix he achieved his best result of the season in seventh place. In Japan , Pérez made up a few places, moving up from 17th to eighth place. At the end of the season he finished 16th overall. Internally he was defeated by his teammate Kamui Kobayashi with 14 to 30 points.
- 2012
Pérez completed his second season for Sauber in 2012 . At the season opener in Australia he finished eighth. As in the previous year, he was the only driver who could only get by with a tire change. In the second race, the Malaysian Grand Prix , Pérez had a chance to win in a race characterized by changing weather conditions. In the duel for victory with Fernando Alonso , however, he made a small driving mistake, but finally crossed the finish line 2.3 seconds behind in second place. At the Monaco Grand Prix he achieved the fastest lap in Formula 1 for the first time, but finished eleventh without any points. A race later in Canada , he achieved another podium finish with a third place. At the Italian Grand Prix he achieved another second place. At the end of the season he finished tenth in the world championship. With that he prevailed internally against Kobayashi with 66 to 60 points.
McLaren (2013)
For the Formula 1 World Championship 2013 , Pérez moved to McLaren . He replaced Lewis Hamilton there and became a teammate of Jenson Button . At the season opener in Australia he missed points in eleventh place. A week later in Malaysia he scored points for McLaren for the first time in ninth place and set the fastest race lap. Pérez achieved his best placement with a fifth place in India . Although the collaboration with McLaren was originally planned for several years, Pérez's commitment to the racing team ended after just one season. With 49 to 73 points he was defeated internally by Button and was eleventh in the drivers' standings.
Force India / Racing Point (since 2014)
- 2014
For the 2014 season , Pérez received a cockpit at Force India . He signed a multi-year contract with the racing team and became Nico Hülkenberg's teammate . When the permanent Formula 1 start numbers were introduced, he chose # 11 for his further career. Pérez justified his choice by saying that he was already using the number in karting and in his debut season of the GP2 series. At the Malaysian Grand Prix , he could not start due to technical problems. A week later in Bahrain he achieved his first podium finish with Force India with a third place. In Austria he set the fastest race lap and finished in sixth place. Pérez finished the season in tenth place overall. Internally, he lost the duel against Hulkenberg with 59 to 96 points.
- 2015
In 2015 , Hülkenberg and Pérez formed the Force India driver duo again. At the Russian Grand Prix , Pérez took third place. He improved to ninth place in the overall standings, which was his best final position in Formula 1 to date. He prevailed against Hulkenberg with 78 to 58 points.
- 2016
In the 2016 Formula 1 World Championship , Pérez and Hülkenberg stayed with Force India. At the Monaco Grand Prix he reached a podium with a third place. Two races later, at the European Grand Prix , Pérez qualified for second place, but started from seventh place due to a starting place penalty. In the race he moved up to third place and thus again on the podium. Pérez won the internal duel against Hülkenberg again with 101 to 72 points and improved again with seventh place in the drivers' standings.
- 2017
In 2017 , Pérez stayed with Force India and got a new teammate in Esteban Ocon . At the end of the season he finished seventh overall with 100 points.
- 2018
In the 2018 Formula 1 World Championship , Pérez competed again for Force India. At the Azerbaijan Grand Prix he came third. During the summer break, Racing Point took over the starting position and the Force India team. In the first race for the newly formed team in Belgium , Pérez finished fifth. At the end of the season he was eighth in the drivers' standings with 62 points.
- 2019
In 2019 , Pérez stayed at Racing Point and got a new teammate in Lance Stroll , the son of team owner and fashion tycoon Lawrence Stroll. He finished the season in tenth place overall with 52 points.
- 2020
In 2020 , Pérez will again form the driver duo with Stroll at Racing Point. In the run-up to the Grand Prix of Great Britain , Pérez tested positive for the SARS-CoV-2 virus . So he was not allowed to start at the Grand Prix. As a result, he had to pause again at the next race, the Grand Prix of the 70th anniversary . At both events he was represented by Nico Hülkenberg . He returned at subsequent races in Spain after testing negative on the Thursday before the Grand Prix. He is currently in ninth place with 33 points in the drivers' standings after the seventh race.
Others
Since the beginning of his career, Pérez has been supported by the Mexican telecommunications company Telmex . In 2016 he signed a sponsorship deal with eyewear manufacturer Hawkers. After Hawkers few weeks after the signing in a Tweet on the occasion of the victory of Donald Trump in the United States presidential election, 2016 commented negatively about Mexicans, Pérez canceled the contract on with immediate effect.
