training
The first free practice session was interrupted shortly after it started because a dog was on the track. Lewis Hamilton finally set the first fastest time on this track ahead of Vettel and Mark Webber . Karun Chandhok took over the lotus from Heikki Kovalainen in this training session . After the practice, Hamilton and Sergio Pérez were given a starting place penalty of three positions by the race stewards because they did not slow down clearly enough when the yellow flags were waved twice. In the third free practice session, Vettel set the fastest lap ahead of Button and Webber. D'Ambrosio and the two HRT pilots Karthikeyan and Ricciardo did not achieve a time within the 107 percent rule in any training session .
Qualifying
Vitaly Petrov set the fastest lap in the first qualifying segment . Due to transmission problems , Timo Glock was unable to set a time within the 107 percent rule and therefore failed to qualify. He was subsequently admitted to the race. In addition, the HRT and Lotus pilots as well as D'Ambrosio and Kamui Kobayashi did not make the leap into the second segment. In this, Vettel was the fastest driver. The Williams and Renault drivers as well as Sergio Pérez , Paul di Resta and Michael Schumacher were eliminated.
