The 2011 European Grand Prix took place on June 26th at the Valencia Street Circuit in Valencia ( Spain ) and was the eighth race of the 2011 Formula 1 World Championship .
Reports
background
After the Canadian Grand Prix , Sebastian Vettel led the drivers' standings with 60 points ahead of Jenson Button and 67 points ahead of Mark Webber . Red Bull-Renault led the constructors' championship with 69 points ahead of McLaren-Mercedes and with 154 points ahead of Ferrari .
In the week before the race, the FIA decided that the engine mapping must not be changed between qualifying and the race. Up until now it was possible to burn additional fuel in qualifying. With the increased exhaust gases, a higher suction effect was achieved at the diffuser . A change in the engine mapping during the race is still allowed, but the racing cars would have to be connected to a notebook during a pit stop . Red Bull-Renault was said to have benefited particularly from the change in engine mapping between qualifying and the race.
At the European Grand Prix, Pirelli provided the drivers with medium (white) and soft (yellow) tire compounds , as well as intermediates (light blue) and full wets (orange) for wet conditions . The medium mixture was first used in the race.
At Sauber , Sergio Pérez , who had sidelined in Canada due to an injury, returned to the cockpit and replaced Pedro de la Rosa .
With Michael Schumacher (six times), Rubens Barrichello , Fernando Alonso (twice each), Felipe Massa and Vettel (once each), five former winners competed in this Grand Prix.
training
In the first free practice session, Webber set the fastest lap ahead of Vitaly Petrow and Alonso. This training took over Nico Hülkenberg the Force India of Paul di Resta , Daniel Ricciardo the Toro Rosso of Sebastien Buemi and Karun Chandhok the Lotus of Jarno Trulli . In the second free practice session, Alonso took the lead ahead of Lewis Hamilton and Vettel. In the third free practice session, Vettel was the fastest driver ahead of Alonso and Massa.
Qualifying
In the first segment of qualifying, Massa achieved the fastest lap. The HRT , Virgin and Lotus pilots and Jaime Alguersuari were eliminated. The second part of the qualification was interrupted after 7 minutes due to a technical defect in Pastor Maldonado's car , which stopped on the track. Vettel drove the fastest lap. The Sauber and Williams pilots as well as Buemi, di Resta and Petrow were eliminated. In the third segment, Vettel finally prevailed and achieved pole position in front of Webber and Hamilton.
run
Sebastian Vettel won the race ahead of Fernando Alonso and team mate Mark Webber.
Sebastian Vettel dominated the race from the start. He quickly gained an advantage while his teammate Mark Webber was able to consolidate second place. At Ferrari, Felipe Massa seemed to be taking third place, but he was slowed down at the first corner by Lewis Hamilton, which meant that team-mate Fernando Alonso was able to overtake him.
The first pit stops were made in laps 12 to 16. This allowed Hamilton to overtake Massa. Michael Schumacher collided with Petrov after exiting the pit lane, causing damage to the front wing. Despite the great distance, the record world champion made it back into the pits and was able to have the front wing replaced. As a result, however, he lost a few positions, which is why he was the last to start again.
On lap 22 Fernando Alonso managed to overtake Mark Webber to the delight of the home fans and was thus second behind Sebastian Vettel. However, there was no pursuit duel with the defending champion, Vettel was always able to extend his lead and drove flawlessly.
The race continued in this constellation. Vettel managed to expand his lead on Alonso. Webber and Hamilton fought for third place. In the meantime, Webber was even able to take second place after Fernando Alonso was in the pits. But he was very unlucky at his pit stops, first he drove too fast into the pit lane and ended up next to the track and then the mechanics messed up changing tires, which is why Webber lost a lot of time and Alonso drove past again.
McLaren driver Jenson Button had problems with the KERS during the race , which is why he was unable to get any closer to the leading group. Mark Webber also complained about transmission problems shortly before the end. Sebastian Vettel was able to easily bring victory over the finish line in front of Fernando Alonso and Mark Webber.
There were no retirements in the race, all 24 drivers finished the race, which is a new record .
