Reports

background

After the Australian Grand Prix , Sebastian Vettel led the drivers' standings with 7 points ahead of Lewis Hamilton and 10 points ahead of Vitaly Petrow . Red Bull-Renault led the constructors' championship with 9 points ahead of McLaren-Mercedes and with 17 points ahead of Ferrari .

At the Malaysian Grand Prix, Pirelli provided the drivers with hard (silver) and soft (yellow) tire compounds , as well as intermediates (light blue) and full wets (orange) for wet conditions . For testing purposes on Friday, the teams also received two sets of tires made of the Supersoft (red) compound , which were used for the first time.

With Michael Schumacher (three times), Fernando Alonso (twice), Jenson Button and Vettel (once each), four former winners competed in this Grand Prix.

training

Jérôme D'Ambrosios Virgin was damaged by a technical problem in the first free practice; in the background is HRT pilot Narain Karthikeyan

In the first free practice, Mark Webber set the fastest lap ahead of Hamilton and Schumacher. He was 1.6 s ahead of Hamilton. Davide Valsecchi drove into this training the Lotus of Heikki Kovalainen and participated for the first time in a Formula 1 training meeting. In addition, Nico Hülkenberg took over the Force India from Paul di Resta and Daniel Ricciardo took over the Toro Rosso from Sébastien Buemi . Nick Heidfeld , Witali Petrow (both Renault ) and Jérôme D'Ambrosio ( Virgin ) suffered technical problems when braking during this session. In the second free practice session, Webber kept the lead. Button, who finished second, reduced the gap to five thousandths of a second. Hamilton finished third.

In the third free practice, McLaren driver Hamilton took the lead in front of Webber and Button.

Qualifying

Sebastian Vettel first achieved pole position and won the race a day later

The first qualifying segment was interrupted after eight minutes because Buemi had lost part of his side box panel. When qualifying resumed, Felipe Massa set the fastest lap. The HRT , Virgin and Lotus pilots and Pastor Maldonado did not make it into the second segment. All pilots kept their time below the 107 percent time . In the second section Button sat at the head of the field. The Force India and Toro Rosso pilots as well as Sergio Pérez , Rubens Barrichello and Schumacher were eliminated. In the last section of qualifying, Vettel finally achieved the fastest lap and secured pole position in front of Hamilton and Webber.

run

The first round of the Grand Prix

Before and during the race, meteorologists expected rain. Except for a few raindrops, however, it stayed dry the entire time and the pilots used slicks throughout.

At the start of the race, third-placed Webber fell back to tenth position. On the other hand, the Renault started well: Heidfeld improved from sixth place to second place behind Vettel and Petrow from eighth to fifth place. There were already a few overtaking maneuvers in the first laps and both Ferrari drivers drove past Petrov. In addition, Webber initially took over the ninth position from Kamui Kobayashi . However, he was overtaken back again because he had problems with his KERS . Nevertheless, a little later he managed to drive past Kobayashi again.

After Maldonado gave up with a technical problem, the first pit stop phase began on the eleventh lap by Webber. In the next few laps, all the pilots came to the pits. Vettel only had to give up his lead to Alonso for one lap. Heidfeld, on the other hand, dropped from second to fifth place due to the pit stop. Hamilton was in second place in front of Alonso, who overtook Button shortly after his pit stop. While Narain Karthikeyan gave up with cooling problems, Buemi received a drive-through penalty. He drove too fast in the pit lane during the pit stop.

With Webber, who had stopped first from the leading group, the tires continued to deteriorate and he also began the second phase of the pit stops. During this Vettel lost the lead again for one lap to Alonso. With the exception of Hamilton in second place, all drivers in the front part of the field kept the softer tire compound. In the meantime, Barrichello had retired with hydraulic problems and Pérez with electrical damage.

Kobayashi during the overtaking maneuver against Schumacher

On lap 28, Kobayashi, who, unlike the other drivers, had only made one pit stop, overtook Schumacher in an overtaking maneuver in the first sector. Jarno Trulli retired on lap 31 with a technical problem. At the top, Vettel increased his lead over Hamilton, who did not seem to benefit from the harder tires and turned into the pit lane before Vettel for his last stop. There was a delay at Hamilton's pit stop, so that he fell back through the stop behind Button, who had already overtaken Alonso at the second stop. Vettel kept the lead even after his last pit stop.

Heidfeld achieved a podium finish in a Renault

While D'Ambrosio rolled out with technical problems, a duel between Hamilton and Alonso developed. Alonso, who was catching up on Hamilton, had problems with his DRS . The two racing drivers finally touched because Alonso misjudged his pace while accelerating out and ran into Hamilton. He damaged his front wing and had to go to the pits for repairs. Heidfeld was a beneficiary of this contact, as he occupied fourth position behind Vettel, Button and Hamilton.

While Vitantonio Liuzzi gave up the race with technical problems, some overtaking maneuvers occurred. Petrov passed Kobayashi and took eighth position. Webber approached Massa with fresher tires and finally drove past him. Heidfeld also managed an overtaking maneuver against Hamilton in a duel for a podium place. He used his DR system for this. After Hamilton had also fallen behind Webber, he changed his tires one more time and fell back to seventh place.

The podium at the Malaysian Grand Prix

Petrov had an accident four laps before the end of the race. His steering column broke during a ride and the race was over for him. His teammate Heidfeld braked shortly before the end of the race, but remained about a second ahead of Webber.

Vettel finally won the race ahead of Button and Heidfeld. Webber finished fourth and Massa fifth.

After the race, Alonso and Hamilton each received a 20-second time penalty. Alonso's sixth place remained unchanged, Hamilton dropped from seventh to eighth place. Alonso received the time penalty because he had run into his vehicle in a duel with Hamilton, Hamilton was punished for changing lanes too often in the duel against Alonso. Kobayashi thus received seventh place. The other points went to Schumacher and di Resta.

In the world championship, Vettel and Red Bull-Renault expanded their existing lead. Button took over the second position from Hamilton, who was now in third place.
