The Malaysian Grand Prix 1999 (officially I Petronas Malaysian Grand Prix ) took place on 17 October at the Sepang International Circuit in Sepang instead and was the 15th race of the Formula 1 World Championship in 1999 . Eddie Irvine took first place ahead of Michael Schumacher and Mika Häkkinen .
report
background
This was Malaysia’s first Formula 1 Grand Prix . The Sepang circuit will remain on the calendar for 19 years up to and including the 2017 Formula 1 World Championship . Michael Schumacher also returned to the Ferrari cockpit after his leg injury.
training
Friday training
The session took place on a wet track that dried up with time. Jacques Villeneuve set the fastest lap time with 1: 42.407 ahead of Coulthard, Alesi, Irvine, Michael Schumacher and Diniz. The world championship leader Häkkinen reached eighth place with a gap of seven tenths. The slowest driver, Marc Gené, was around seven seconds behind the fastest time and around three seconds behind the penultimate Takagi.
Saturday training
The returnees Michael Schumacher finished the fastest training time with 1: 40.424 before his teammates Irvine, Häkkinen, Herbert, Coulthard and Villeneuve. The slowest driver, Toranosuke Takagi, was around four and a half seconds behind the best time.
Qualifying
Michael Schumacher took pole position with 1: 39.688 with a lead of almost a second over the second Irvine. Behind them are the McLaren duo Coulthard and Häkkinen and the Stewart duo Herbert and Barrichello in sixth place. Frentzen had considerable coordination problems with his car and only achieved 14th place. The slowest driver, Toranosuke Takagi, was around five seconds behind the fastest time.
Warm-up
Rubens Barrichello set the fastest time with 1: 41.679 ahead of Coulthard, Häkkinen, Irvine, Michael Schumacher and Herbert. Trulli suffered an engine failure during the warm-up, the first of three engine failures for Peugeot. The slowest driver, Marc Gené, was around four seconds behind the best time.
run
There was a high probability of rain before the start of the race, but the track stayed dry until the end of the race. On the warm-up lap, Trulli suffered engine damage for the second time this weekend and was unable to take part in the race.
After the start of the race, Michael Schumacher kept the lead from Irvine, Coulthard and Häkkinen. The Scot would have let Häkkinen pass in turn one, but Häkkinen did not take the opportunity. In turn two, Fisichella crashed into Hill, who could not continue the race. Fisichella suffered a puncture and will finish the race four laps behind. During the third round, Michael Schumacher let his teammate Irvine pass so that he could collect valuable points for the world championship. At the same time, the German began to hold back the McLarens behind until Coulthard squeezed past Schumacher in the second corner on lap four. Panis also suffered engine damage on lap five; it was the third broken Peugeot engine that day. Coulthard started chasing Irvine until the Scot rolled out on the penultimate straight just before lap 15. Michael Schumacher, meanwhile, clearly stopped Häkkinen for around eight laps, on lap 22 Schumacher began to pull away from Häkkinen in order not to endanger his own pit stop. On the same lap, Michael Schumacher set the fastest lap time to date with 1: 40.943 and was two seconds faster than the leading Irvine.
On lap 25, Irvine began his first of two planned stops, after about seven seconds of standing he came back on the track. Two laps later, Häkkinen came to the planned only stop, Michael Schumacher the following lap also to his only stop. After the pit stops, Irvine continued to lead ahead of Michael Schumacher and Häkkinen. On lap 41 Irvine made his second and final pit stop, but after a quick check-in in under seven seconds, he came out on the track in third place behind Michael Schumacher and Häkkinen. For a long time it looked as if Häkkinen would finish the race in second place, until he had to refuel again on lap 47 and thus briefly fell back to fourth place, until he overtook Herbert again for third place on lap 53. In lap 52 there was internal castling at Ferrari and with it Eddie Irvine won the race in Malaysia ahead of Michael Schumacher and Mika Häkkinen . This was also the 125th victory for Ferrari as a designer and engine manufacturer, the fourth and final victory for Eddie Irvine in Formula 1 and the last point placement for the Stewart team. The winner's trophy was presented to Eddie Irvine by Mahathir bin Mohamad , the Prime Minister of Malaysia . The trophy for the victorious designer Ferrari was also presented by Mahathir bin Mohamad, who also gave their trophies to the second and third placed drivers.
After the race
Almost immediately after the race, both Ferrari F399s were disqualified from the race weekend because the side wind deflectors ( "bargeboard" ) did not conform to the rules by ten millimeters during the technical inspection. This would have meant a victory for Häkkinen in Malaysia as well as winning the Formula 1 World Championship, but after a court appeal by Ferrari, the decision of the FIA was reversed and the result was confirmed with Irvine as the winner.
