The 2008 Malaysian Grand Prix took place on March 23rd at the Sepang International Circuit in Sepang and was the second race of the 2008 Formula 1 World Championship . Kimi Räikkönen ( Ferrari ) was the winner, ahead of Robert Kubica ( BMW-Sauber ) and Heikki Kovalainen ( McLaren-Mercedes ).

Kimi Raikkonen achieved his 16th Grand Prix victory in Formula 1. Felipe Massa took his 10th pole position at a Grand Prix. Nick Heidfeld set the first fastest race lap of his Formula 1 career. For Ferrari it was the 202nd Grand Prix victory and the 196th pole position in Formula 1. BMW achieved its first fastest race lap as a vehicle manufacturer; it was the 32nd as an engine manufacturer in Formula 1.

In free practice, the Brazilian Felipe Massa drove the fastest lap in a Ferrari . His team mate Kimi Räikkönen was in 2nd place ahead of Heikki Kovalainen ( McLaren-Mercedes ). In the afternoon, Lewis Hamilton set the fastest time. Second came Massa, Raikkonen third. In the last free practice session, Nick Heidfeld ( BMW Sauber ) was first ahead of Raikkonen. Massa took third place.
qualification
In the first qualifying stage, Italian Jarno Trulli drove the best lap time in a Toyota . Heikki Kovalainen and Felipe Massa followed in 2nd and 3rd place. In stage 1, Super Aguri Honda and Force India-Ferrari were completely eliminated. Sébastien Bourdais and Kazuki Nakajima also retired early. In the second qualifying stage, Kimi Raikkonen was the fastest ahead of Massa and Lewis Hamilton . In stage 2, Renault and Honda were completely eliminated. In the last qualifying stage, Ferrari secured the front row. Massa drove the fastest lap in 1: 35.748 minutes. Raikkonen was second ahead of Kovalainen.

The second race of the 2008 season was won by Kimi Raikkonen ahead of Robert Kubica and Heikki Kovalainen .
Raikkonen got off to a good start and after a few meters was tied with pole setter Felipe Massa (Ferrari), but to avoid a collision within the team, he slacked off. Behind them were Kubica, Mark Webber (Red Bull Renault) and Lewis Hamilton (McLaren-Mercedes). The first retirement was Sébastien Bourdais : At turn six he drove his Toro Rosso Ferrari into the gravel trap with a driving error. Timo Glock also dropped out after the first lap after a collision with Nico Rosberg . The two Ferrari drivers exchanged places on the 18th lap. Massa came to the pit stop before his team-mate. Raikkonen took advantage of this. He drove a fast time on the same lap and had enough lead to get back out onto the track ahead of Massa.
Massa was eliminated after a spin in the 30th lap.
Nick Heidfeld drove the fastest race lap in 1: 35.366 min.
In the world championship, after two of 18 races this year, Hamilton led with 14 points ahead of Raikkonen, Heidfeld (11 each), Kovalainen (10) and Kubica (8). Among the constructors, the Silver Arrows lost no point on Ferrari and only one point on BMW Sauber, so McLaren-Mercedes (24) continued to lead ahead of BMW Sauber (19) and Ferrari (11). Williams-Toyota dropped from second to fourth place.
