The 2008 Australian Grand Prix took place on March 16 at the Albert Park Circuit in Melbourne and was the first race of the 2008 Formula 1 World Championship . The winner was Lewis Hamilton ( McLaren-Mercedes ) in front of Nick Heidfeld ( BMW Sauber ) and Nico Rosberg ( Williams-Toyota ).

In the first free practice of the new Formula 1 season, defending champion Kimi Räikkönen drove the fastest lap in a Ferrari . Lewis Hamilton ( McLaren-Mercedes ) was in second place ahead of Felipe Massa (Ferrari). In the afternoon, Hamilton set the fastest time. In second place was the local hero Mark Webber in the Red Bull-Renault , Raikkonen third. In the last free practice session, Robert Kubica ( BMW Sauber ) was first ahead of his teammate Nick Heidfeld . Fernando Alonso took third place.

qualification

In the first qualifying stage, Heikki Kovalainen drove the best lap time in a McLaren-Mercedes. Nick Heidfeld and Felipe Massa followed in 2nd and 3rd place. In stage 1, Super Aguri Honda and Force India-Ferrari were completely eliminated. Sébastien Bourdais and Nelson Piquet Jr. also retired early. In the second qualifying stage, Hamilton was the fastest ahead of Kubica and Kovalainen. Raikkonen missed the leap into the third section because he could not complete a timed lap and was sixteenth. In the last qualifying stage, Lewis Hamilton secured pole position in 1: 26.714 minutes. Robert Kubica was second ahead of Kovalainen.

Lewis Hamilton won the first race of the 2008 season. The McLaren-Mercedes driver managed a start and finish victory ahead of Nick Heidfeld and Nico Rosberg . Button, Davidson, Fisichella and Vettel were eliminated after a collision in the first round. Local hero Mark Webber also had to end his race after a few meters due to problems in the hydraulics. Seven of 22 cars made it to the finish line. Rubens Barrichello was subsequently disqualified by the stewards in sixth place because he had left the pit lane when red. Among other things, Raikkonen benefited: Although he had to park his car two laps before the end of the race, he subsequently received a World Championship point.

The safety car was used a total of three times . Heikki Kovalainen set the fastest race lap in 1: 27.418 minutes.

Lewis Hamilton achieved his seventh pole position and secured his fifth victory in Formula 1. Heikki Kovalainen set his first fastest race lap. For McLaren it was the 134th pole position, the 135th fastest race lap and the 157th Grand Prix victory in Formula 1 history. Mercedes achieved the 63rd pole position, the 75th fastest race lap and the 62nd victory as an engine manufacturer in Formula 1. For tire supplier Bridgestone it was the 115th pole position, the 117th fastest race lap and the 122nd Grand Prix victory in Formula 1. Nico Rosberg achieved his first podium finish in Formula 1. Sébastien Bourdais secured his first championship points in his first Grand Prix. Kazuki Nakajima scored his first championship points in his second Grand Prix. Nelson Piquet Jr. retired from his first Grand Prix.
