Anthony Davidson (born April 18, 1979 in Hemel Hempstead , England ) is a British automobile racing driver . He took part in the Formula 1 World Championship between 2002 and 2008 . After the withdrawal of his last team, Super Aguri F1, during the 2008 season , Davidson worked as a test driver at Brawn GP and as a commentator for the British radio station Radio 5 Live . In 2014 , he and Sébastien Buemi won the driver's title in the FIA World Endurance Championship .
Career
Beginnings
Davidson began in 1994 in the British Junior Kart Masters with motorsport . This was followed by several successes in national and international kart series in Europe and Asia until 1999. In the winter season of the same year he then successfully took part in the winter series of the British Formula Ford Championship . In order to switch to the British and European Formula 3 championships after another year in the junior formula . Although he was runner-up in his home country for the season and won the championship title in the European counterpart. At the end of 2000 he won the McLaren Autosport BRDC Award .

At the same time, Davidson received a contract as a test driver for the then BAR-Honda team in 2001 , with whom he remained under contract until the takeover of Honda in the 2006 season . However, in 2002 there was already the opportunity to drive two Grand Prix races for the Minardi team . In the Italian team, he replaced Alex Yoong , who had been driving until then , but did not finish either of the two championship races. BAR team boss David Richards , who was also chairman of the Prodrive company , enabled Davidson to take part in the Le Mans 24-hour race in a Ferrari 550 Maranello GTS prepared by Prodrive in 2003, in addition to his job as a test driver . However, the car with Davidson, Darren Turner and Kelvin Burt failed prematurely with a technical defect. He was also registered in four championship races of the American Le Mans Series before and after the race at Le Mans . Davidson finished three of the races with alternating driver pairings on the podium in the GTS category . With the introduction of Friday drivers in Formula 1, whose role Davidson took over in the 2004 Formula 1 season , he was able to gain experience on various Formula 1 racetracks. At the Malaysian Grand Prix the following year, regular driver Takuma Satō fell ill , Davidson took over the vehicle, but had to end his third Formula 1 race prematurely due to a technical defect.
Honda, which had now completely taken over the British racing team BAR, extended Davidson's contract in 2006. In addition to the role of test and Friday driver, Davidson took on the role of commentator on the radio station BBC Radio 5 Live. For 2007 Davidson got the second cockpit at Super Aguri next to his former BAR teammate Takuma Satō. In 2008 he started the season for the Japanese team, which however announced its withdrawal from Formula 1 after only four races. Davidson was subsequently taken over by Honda again as a test driver and was a replacement driver at Brawn GP in 2009 .

In 2009 he drove again for the Aston Martin works team, led by Prodrive, in the Le Mans 24-hour race. In the Lola-Aston Martin LMP1 with Jos Verstappen and Darren Turner, he finished 13th overall. A month later he also took part in the Spa-Francorchamps 24-hour race . There he drives a Nissan GT-R with Turner and Michael Krumm for the Nissan works team . Like Le Mans, he finished the championship run for the FIA GT Championship in 13th place overall. In February 2010 it was announced that Davidson had signed a contract with Peugeot . He then started the Sebring 12-hour race , which he won together with Marc Gené and Alexander Wurz on the Peugeot 908 HDi FAP diesel prototype . He is also scheduled for further use in the 1000 km race of Spa-Francorchamps of the Le Mans Series and at the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
He has been contesting the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) for Toyota Racing since 2013 . He contested all races of the season together with Sébastien Buemi and Stéphane Sarrazin , the trio won the 6-hour race in Bahrain and finished the season in third place.
In 2014 he drove the first four races of the season with Buemi and Nicolas Lapierre , after which he only shared the car with Buemi. With four wins and three further podium finishes in eight races, Buemi and Davidson jointly secured the drivers' title.
In 2015 Kazuki replaced Nakajima Lapierre, but the Toyota TS040 Hybrid was technically inferior to the competing vehicles from Audi and Porsche, so that Buemi, Davidson and Nakajima only stood on the podium at the season opener, the 6-hour race at Silverstone . Buemi and Davidson finished fifth in the overall standings, while Nakajima had to skip one race and finished seventh.
The FIA World Endurance Championship in 2016 denied Buemi, Davidson and Nakajima again together with the newly developed Toyota TS050 Hybrid .
