The Toyota TS050 Hybrid is a sports car prototype that was developed and built by Toyota in accordance with LMP1 regulations . The car is the successor to the Toyota TS040 Hybrid used in the FIA World Endurance Championship in 2014 and 2015 .
development
Toyota announced the TS050 Hybrid during the 2015 FIA World Endurance Championship , which was disappointing for Toyota . The car should get a new technology concept, which was actually only intended for 2017. The racing car was presented on March 24, 2016 at the Circuit Paul Ricard .
A new feature is a V6 biturbo engine that is more efficient than the naturally aspirated V8 engine installed in the predecessor. A seven-speed sequential transmission is used for power transmission.
There is an electric motor on the front and rear axles. The high-performance capacitors used to store the electrically recovered energy have been replaced by lithium-ion batteries. These changes enabled the Toyota TS050 to be classified in the eight megajoule class, the highest hybrid class in the 2016 FIA World Endurance Championship. The aerodynamics have also been further developed, in favor of lower air resistance, downforce was dispensed with.
In January 2018, a study was presented with the Toyota GR Super Sport Concept , which is technically based on the TS050 and takes the drive from the racing car largely unchanged. Series production as a street-legal car in small numbers is planned.
Races
Toyota fielded two TS050s in the 2016 FIA World Endurance Championship including the Le Mans 24 Hours . The car won the 6-hour race in Fuji , but in Le Mans the race was lost shortly before the end after the car in the lead broke down three minutes before the end of the race due to a drive train defect. In 2018, the two TS050s took 1st and 2nd place in the 24 Hours of Le Mans , securing Toyota its first Le Mans victory. In 2019 Toyota repeated the double victory of the previous year with the two TS050s.
Driver line-up
Since the Toyota works driver Alexander Wurz announced the end of his career, he was replaced by Kamui Kobayashi.
