Career
Conway began his motorsport career at the age of eight in karting , where he was active until 2000. Among other things, he won the British Formula A kart championship in 2000. In 2001 he switched to the single-seater racing and launched initially in the British Formula Ford -Juniorenmeisterschaft, he was placed in right away with a win in sixth place in the standings. After taking part in a number of regular British Formula Ford races this season, he entered this championship in 2002 and finished fourth overall with six podium finishes. In 2003 he moved to Fortec Motorsport in the British Formula Renault . He won a race and was fourth at the end of the season. 2004 Conway stayed in this championship and won the championship title with eight wins in front of Westley Barber . In addition, he competed in a total of three races in the Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup in the two seasons , one of which he won.
In 2005 Conway switched to the British Formula 3 Championship , in which he initially competed again for Fortec Motorsport. He achieved a race win and he was third in the championship behind Charlie Kimball and the champion Álvaro Parente . 2006 Conway moved to Raikkonen Robertson Racing , for which he contested his second season in the British Formula 3 championship. He won 8 of 22 races and won the championship title ahead of Oliver Jarvis and his team-mate Bruno Senna . He also won the prestigious Macau Grand Prix .
After Conway had already completed two races in the GP2 series for DPR Direxiv in the 2006 season and finished 29th overall, he switched to the GP2 series for the British racing team Super Nova Racing in 2007 , where he became Luca Filippi's teammate . While Filippi was fourth in the drivers' standings, Conway was 14th overall. A second place in his home race at Silverstone was his best result. In 2007 he was also one of three Formula 1 test drivers for the Japanese racing team Honda . In 2008 , Conway moved in the GP2 series as a teammate from Ho-Pin Tung to Trident Racing . He scored points in a few races during the season and won the sprint race in Monte Carlo . In the overall standings, Conway, who was better than his teammate Tung, finished twelfth. He was also a Formula 1 test driver for the Honda team again and he took part in some races of the International GT Open .
In 2009 Conway left Europe and moved to America in the IndyCar Series . At Dreyer & Reinbold Racing he received a cockpit for the entire season. With a third place as the best result, he finished 17th in the overall ranking at the end of his first season. In December he was allowed to complete Formula 1 test drives for Brawn GP , the winner of the constructors' championship. In 2010 he stayed with Dreyer & Reinbold Racing and got a permanent teammate with his compatriot Justin Wilson . At the highlight of the season, the Indianapolis 500 , Conway first drew attention to himself with leadership laps. On the 199th of 200 laps, he collided with Ryan Hunter-Reay , who, after his tank ran out of petrol, had the engine cut out. Conway's car was catapulted into the air on contact and flew into the safety fence. At the end of the accident, only the driver's cell was left of the racing car. Conway survived the accident with serious injuries. He suffered multiple fractures in his left leg, a tissue injury on his left leg, and a compression fracture in a thoracic vertebra. He was replaced by various pilots in the remaining races. In the 2010 season, which he had to finish in 15th place overall after the serious accident at the Indianapolis 500, he finished 25th in the drivers' championship at the end of the season.
In 2011 , Conway returned to the IndyCar Series after his injury and competed for Andretti Autosport . After failing to finish in the first two races, he scored his first IndyCar win in the third race at Long Beach . In the further course of the season he never finished within the top 5. For the Indianapolis 500, he failed to qualify. Since he had been noticed in the first ten events by two collisions he had caused, he drove on parole until the end of the season. He finished the season as the worst Andretti driver in 17th place overall. For the 2012 season, Conway moved to AJ Foyt Enterprises . At the Indianapolis 500 he had another serious accident. This time he was unharmed. At the Honda Indy Toronto , he achieved his first podium finish for his new team with a third place. It remained his only top five finish of the season. Shortly before the end of the season, the MAVTV 500 , which took place on the Oval in Fontana , Conway announced that he would not take part in this race and generally ruled out further participation in oval races. Conway stated that he had never felt comfortable on the ovals and that it was not easy for him to return to the oval courses after his serious accident in Indianapolis in 2010. Conway earned the respect of several IndyCar Series drivers and team bosses for his decision. Conway finished the IndyCar season in 21st place overall.
In 2013 , Conway received a cockpit in the LMP2 class of the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) at the G-Drive Racing team, which was overseen by Alan Docking Racing . He forms a team with John Martin and Roman Russinow . The trio won the LMP2 classification in four out of eight races. Her best overall placement was a third place at the season finale. The three drivers finished seventh in the drivers' world championship. As part of the WEC, he made his debut at the Le Mans 24-hour race this year . The trio was disqualified in this race. He also completed a race in the American Le Mans Series (ALMS) for Level 5 Motorsports . He represented Ryan Briscoe , who was injured. He also competed in individual IndyCar races in 2013 . For Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing he took part in the race in Long Beach , at Dale Coyne Racing he was given a cockpit for the three double-header events in Detroit , Toronto and Houston . In Detroit he won the first race and was third in the second run. In a total of seven starts, Conway made it into the top 10 five times.
In 2014 , Conway completed all IndyCar races on street circuits for Ed Carpenter Racing . He shared the cockpit with team owner Ed Carpenter , who took over the vehicle on the oval courses. Conway won one race each in Long Beach and Toronto . He was 23rd in the drivers' championship. Together with his teammate Carpenter, who has won a race, the two would have finished eighth overall. In addition, Conway took over the position of test and reserve driver at Toyota in the FIA World Endurance Championship. In this role he took part in three races and won together with Stéphane Sarrazin and Alexander Wurz in Bahrain . Conway finished eleventh in the drivers' championship. In addition, Conway planned a commitment to Dragon Racing in the FIA Formula E Championship . Due to his duties for Toyota in the WEC, however, shortly before the start of the season he decided against participating in Formula E. In 2015 , Conway received a full-time cockpit at Toyota in the FIA World Endurance Championship. Together with his teammates Sarrazin and Wurz, he achieved third place at the season finale in as-Sachir . The trio finished the season in sixth place overall.
At the beginning of 2016 , Conway joined the Venturi Formula E Team in the FIA Formula E Championship . He completed seven races, with an eighth place being his best result. In addition, Conway will be competing again in 2016 with Sarrazin for Toyota Gazoo Racing in the FIA World Endurance Championship. Kamui Kobayashi replaced Wurz as their teammate.
