Reports
background
After the ABC Supply Wisconsin 250 , Will Power led the drivers' standings by 39 points over Hélio Castroneves and 92 points over Simon Pagenaud .
There was a change in the starting field. There was a driver change at Ed Carpenter Racing . Mike Conway , who only drove the street course races, replaced Ed Carpenter , who competed in all oval races.
On the night from Saturday to Sunday on the race weekend, there was an earthquake near the track . No one was injured on the track and only minor damage to property occurred, so the race took place as planned.
With Power (three times), Tony Kanaan , Marco Andretti , Scott Dixon , Castroneves and Ryan Briscoe (once each), six former winners competed in this race.
training
Two training sessions of 45 minutes each took place on Saturday. In the first free practice, Ryan Hunter-Reay was the fastest ahead of Dixon and Kanaan. Several drivers stood out with minor driving errors. However, the training took place continuously under green flags as there was no major incident.
In the second free practice, Castroneves set the fastest time ahead of Briscoe and Hunter-Reay. Due to the higher air and asphalt temperatures, the times were slower compared to the first training session.
Qualifying
The first part of the qualifying was held in two groups according to the usual qualifying system for street courses. The six fastest drivers in each group came into the second segment. The remaining starting positions were determined from the result of the first qualifying segment, with the drivers in the first group being assigned the odd positions from 13 and the drivers in the second group the even positions from 14. In the first group Josef Newgarden drove the fastest lap, in the second group Power was the fastest driver.
In the second segment of the qualification, the six fastest drivers qualified for the final section. Newgarden achieved the fastest lap time. Alongside him, Dixon, James Hinchcliffe , Castroneves, Power and Briscoe made it into the third part of qualifying, the so-called Firestone Fast Six.
In the third part, Power finally set the fastest time and took pole position ahead of Newgarden and Dixon. After shortening the route, Castroneves was able to cancel the fastest time so that he finished sixth instead of second.
Final training
In the final training session on Sunday morning, Dixon led ahead of Newgarden and Mikhail Aleshin .
run
After the start there was an accident on the uphill section. Castroneves, Kanaan, Sébastien Bourdais and Hinchcliffe were involved in the accident. All drivers drove on, several pits and the race continued under the yellow flag. The incident in the first lap enabled Hunter-Reay to improve from eleventh to fourth place. The first three positions remained unchanged.
Power stayed in the lead at the restart. Kanaan moved past Hunter-Reay into fourth position. While Power quickly pulled away from the front for several seconds, his team-mate Castroneves pitted for another repair stop. But he stayed in the leading lap. On lap 16, Power and Dixon pitted from the top 3, while Newgarden stayed outside and took the lead. Newgarden pitted after two laps, falling behind Dixon. Juan Pablo Montoya led the race for one lap before pitting too and Power leading the race again.
On lap 29, Carlos Huertas stopped in the fifth corner and retired due to a technical defect. There was a yellow phase for recovery, so that Power lost his eleven-second lead over Dixon. Graham Rahal , Kanaan, Takuma Satō and Conway pitted. At the restart, Power stayed ahead of Dixon. Hunter-Reay passed Newgarden into third position. In the fifth corner there was a collision between Castroneves, Kanaan, Bourdais and Sebastián Saavedra , which triggered another caution phase. The front of the field went to the pits, with Dixon passing Power. Several drivers stayed outside and were thus at the front of the field. Kanaan led ahead of Conway, Briscoe, Rahal, Satō and Bourdais, all of whom were on a different pit strategy.
At the restart, Conway took the lead past Kanaan. On the lap after the restart, Power and Carlos Muñoz turned independently of each other in the hairpin. Both fell to the end of the field, but drove on. Conway gradually moved away from the front in the next few laps and built a larger lead. In the 59th round, Conway pitted and Satō took the lead for one lap before pitting too and Montoya taking over the lead. When Montoya pitted, Conway and Rahal dueled for the lead, with Rahal winning the duel and leading the race.
The first three drivers, Rahal, Conway and Kanaan, needed another caution period to cross the finish line without stopping, while Dixon was able to drive through in fourth place without stopping. On lap 73, Kanaan decided to make another pit stop, so Dixon took third place. On the 82nd lap Rahal made a brief final pit stop and lost the lead to Conway. Rahal was too fast in the pit lane, so that he also got a penalty and fell far back. Conway briefly took the lead but quickly lost some positions and Dixon took the lead. Conway and Kimball ran out of fuel on the final lap, but Conway managed to roll over the finish line.
Dixon eventually won his second race of the season ahead of Hunter-Reay and Pagenaud. With his 35th IndyCar win, Dixon moved into fifth place in the all-time best of the best, leveling with Bobby Unser . Satō was fourth, Montoya fifth. Newgarden, Aleshin, Andretti, Justin Wilson and Power completed the top 10.
In the championship, Power kept the lead from Castroneves. Pagenaud took the third position. Even Hunter-Reay and Dixon in fourth and fifth had a theoretical chance of the title after this race.
