Carlos Huertas (born June 22, 1991 in Bogotá ) is a Colombian racing driver . He competed in British Formula 3 from 2009 to 2011 . In 2012 and 2013 he competed in Formula Renault 3.5 . In 2014 and 2015 he drove in the IndyCar Series .

Career

Huertas began his motorsport career in karting in 2001 , which he was active in until 2006. In 2007 he moved to Europe into formula racing and competed for Räikkönen Robertson Racing in the British Formula BMW . At the end of his debut season, he finished 13th overall. In 2008 Huertas stayed with Räikkönen Robertson Racing and competed in the European Formula BMW, which had emerged from the merger of the British with the German Formula BMW. With a second place as the best result, he finished ninth in the overall classification at the end of the season. He also started on a racing weekend in the Australian Formula 3 .

In 2009 Huertas switched to the British Formula 3 championship and competed again for Raikkonen Robertson Racing. His best result came in the first race in Portimão , where he finished fourth and, with two guest drivers ahead of him, was classified in second place. At the end of the season he had just as many points as his teammate Daisuke Nakajima , but since Nakajima had better placements, he finished eighth overall behind him. 2010 Huertas stayed with Raikkonen Robertson Racing and contested his second season in the British Formula 3 championship. With three second places as the best results, he finished tenth in the overall ranking. In 2011 Huertas moved to Carlin and completed his third season in the British Formula 3 championship. After scoring seven podium finishes, he won his first British Formula 3 race at the season finale. Huertas finished the season in third place in the championship behind his teammates Felipe Nasr and Kevin Magnussen . In addition, Huertas took part in the 2011 FIA Formula 3 Trophy . He finished this in eighth place.

In 2012 Huertas competed for Fortec Motorsport in the Formula Renault 3.5 . While his team-mate Robin Frijns won the championship title, Huertas was 16th in the drivers' championship with fourth place as the best result. In 2013 Huertas returned to Carlin, for whom he completed his second season in Formula Renault 3.5. He won a race in Alcañiz and came in 14th overall. With 30 to 24 points he prevailed internally against Jazeman Jaafar .

In 2014 Huertas moved to North America in the IndyCar Series for Dale Coyne Racing . In Houston he managed a surprise win in the first race due to his strategy and was part of a Colombian triple victory, as his compatriots Juan Pablo Montoya and Carlos Muñoz completed the podium. Huertas was only in the top 10 with two others. He finished the season in 20th place overall and internally defeated Justin Wilson with 314 to 395 points. In 2015 , Huertas completed his second IndyCar season for Dale Coyne Racing. At the Indianapolis 500 he was withdrawn due to an ear disease. It was then no longer used.
