Reports

background

After the Honda Indy Grand Prix of Alabama , Juan Pablo Montoya led the drivers' standings with three points ahead of Hélio Castroneves and with 13 points ahead of Scott Dixon .

There were two driver changes and two additional vehicles in the starting field. Sebastián Saavedra returned to Chip Ganassi Racing after a race break and took over the car from Sage Karam . The two drivers shared the cockpit this season. At Dale Coyne Racing , Carlos Huertas came back to work after two races and replaced Rodolfo González . Andretti Autosport fielded a fourth vehicle for Justin Wilson . Wilson returned to the championship on a part-time basis, having not received a regular cockpit after seven years. CFH Racing expanded its line-up to three racing cars. JR Hildebrand received the third car. He had most recently for the predecessor team Ed Carpenter Racing at Indianapolis 500 2014 participated.

At this Grand Prix, Castroneves took part in an IndyCar race 300 times. He turned 40 one day after the race.

With Simon Pagenaud currently the only former winners entered in this Grand Prix.

Two days after the Grand Prix, which was held on a Saturday, the training sessions for the Indianapolis 500 2015 began on the oval course of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

training

In the first practice session on Thursday, Sébastien Bourdais set the fastest time ahead of Power and Dixon. The Chevrolet drivers were largely superior to the Honda drivers. The ratio within the top ten was eight to two. Takuma Satō was the best Honda driver in sixth. In the second training session, Dixon took the lead. Power was second, Montoya third. The training session was briefly interrupted in the initial phase after Power went off the track at Turn 7. Eight Chevrolet drivers were again in the top 10. The best Honda driver was Graham Rahal in seventh place.

In the third training session on Friday, Castroneves took the lead. Bourdais was second ahead of Pagenaud. Rahal was eighth and the only Honda rider in the top ten.

Qualifying

The first part of the qualifying was held in two groups according to the usual qualifying system for street courses. The six fastest drivers in each group came into the second segment. The remaining starting positions were determined from the result of the first qualifying segment, with the drivers in the first group being assigned the odd positions from 13 and the drivers in the second group the even positions from 14. Power drove the fastest lap in the first group, and Dixon was the fastest driver in the second group. Of the twelve Honda drivers, only Jack Hawksworth managed to qualify for the second section.

In the second segment of the qualification, the six fastest drivers qualified for the final section. Power achieved the fastest lap time. Alongside him, Pagenaud, Castroneves, Tony Kanaan , Montoya and Dixon made it into the third part of qualifying, the so-called Firestone Fast Six . Hawksworth was the best Honda driver in eleventh place.

In the third part, Power finally set the fastest time and achieved pole position ahead of his teammates Dixon and Castroneves. Power set a new best time on his fastest lap.

Final training

In the final training session on Saturday morning, Stefano Coletti achieved the fastest lap ahead of Pagenaud and Dixon. Rahal was the only Honda rider in the top 10 in sixth place.

run

At the start, Power kept the lead. Several collisions occurred in the wider field. The second-placed Dixon was shot by Castroneves, which is why Dixon had to pit to change both wings. Separately, Hawksworth met Luca Filippi , with other drivers being affected. Josef Newgarden collided with James Hinchcliffe and pitted. While many drivers lost positions due to the chaos on the track, Rahal benefited greatly from the incidents and improved from 17th to 5th place on the first lap.

At the restart, Power kept the lead ahead of Pagenaud, Bourdais, Montoya and Rahal. The first five positions remained unchanged until the first pit stop phase. On the 20th lap, Montoya began the pit stop phase. Power, Pagenaud and Bourdais followed a lap later. Rahal stayed two laps longer on the track and was now in the lead. Thanks to the later pit stop, he returned to the track in second place ahead of Pagenaud. During the stops, James Jakes and Hinchcliffe also performed. After the pit stops, Power was back in front of Rahal, Pagenaud, Bourdais and Montoya.

The first five positions remained unchanged until the next pit stop phase. Power made his second stop on lap 39. Rahal took the lead for four laps. During the stops, Dixon and Hinchcliffe were briefly in the lead. Power then led Rahal again. Behind them, Montoya took third place in front of Bourdais and Pagenaud. The last one was canceled shortly before the third and final pit stop phase with an electronics problem.

The drivers also completed the last pit stop under green and Power stopped again in front of Rahal. Charlie Kimball led for a lap in between before Power took the lead again. The first four positions were unchanged after the pit stop. Wilson retired after the last stop with a technical problem. Power led the race for 65 of 82 laps. He only gave up the lead during pit stops.

Power thus achieved his first win of the season ahead of Rahal, Montoya, Bourdais and Kimball. Castroneves was sixth ahead of Kanaan and Coletti, who dueled for a long time in the race. Satō and Dixon completed the top 10.

Montoya remained in the lead in the drivers' championship. Power took over second position, pushing Castroneves into third place.
