Reports
background
After the Honda Indy Grand Prix of Alabama , Will Power led the drivers' standings with 18 points from Ryan Hunter-Reay and 33 points from Simon Pagenaud .
Compared to the previous race, two additional vehicles were used. Andretti Autosport expanded the line-up to five vehicles for the two Indianapolis races. Franck Montagny was used in the Grand Prix . It was Montagny's third IndyCar race. His last job, the Indy Grand Prix of Sonoma 2009 , was also for Andretti. AJ Foyt Enterprises fielded a second vehicle for both Indianapolis races. Martin Plowman received the cockpit for both races. Plowman's last IndyCar race was the 2011 Baltimore Grand Prix .
For the first time, an IndyCar race was held on a street circuit variant of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway . In the run-up to the Grand Prix, the track was praised by drivers during test drives. In contrast to the Indianapolis 500 , the route was driven clockwise. Formula 1 also chose this direction of travel for its appearances at the US Grand Prix from 2000 to 2007. In the starting field were Montagny, Juan Pablo Montoya , Takuma Satō and Justin Wilson, four drivers who participated in Formula 1 races on a similar street circuit. Variant of Indianapolis Motor Speedway participated. Satō (3rd place, 2004 ) and Wilson (8th place, 2003 ) achieved their best Formula 1 placements here.
After the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach , the Grand Prix of Indianapolis is the second race of the season to start with a standing start.
One day after the Grand Prix, training for the Indianapolis 500 began in 2014 on the oval course of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
training
In the first practice session, Sébastien Bourdais set the fastest time ahead of Hunter-Reay and Pagenaud. The training was interrupted twice. On the one hand Josef Newgarden rode out in the fourth corner, on the other hand there was a power failure in the headquarters of the race management. In the second training session, Scott Dixon was the fastest pilot. Pagenaud came second, Power third. Jack Hawksworth and Newgarden had to stop training three and six minutes early as a punishment for arriving too late at the mandatory weighing after the first training session.
The third training took place in the rain. In the middle of training there was no new rain for a short time, so the best times were achieved in this phase. Pagenaud set the fastest lap ahead of Hawksworth and James Hinchcliffe . Several drivers spun or strayed from the track without interruption. Practice was interrupted only once after Ryan Briscoe spun in the sixth corner. Due to a spin by Mikhail Aleshin on the back straight, the training ended 30 seconds early.
Qualifying
The first part of the time training was held in two groups. The six fastest drivers in each group came into the second segment. The remaining starting positions were determined from the result of the first qualifying segment, with the drivers in the first group being assigned the odd positions from 13 and the drivers in the second group the even positions from 14. At the beginning of qualifying it started to rain lightly, but the track was still dry and the drivers were using slicks. In the first group, Pagenaud set the fastest lap. Sebastián Saavedra spun on the wet track, but drove on and came into the next qualifying part in fifth. In the second group, Montoya was the fastest pilot. Aleshin had his two fastest laps canceled due to handicap, so that he fell back to last place and did not move into the next section, as his fastest time would have allowed.
In the second segment of the qualification, the six fastest drivers qualified for the final section. The rain increased so that driving on dry tires was no longer possible and the drivers switched to wet tires. Hawksworth posted the fastest lap time. Next to him, Power, Dixon, Hunter-Reay, Saavedra and Pagenaud made it into the third part of qualifying, the so-called Firestone Fast Six.
The last section was canceled because there was too much water on the route. The final was restarted with the originally planned duration of ten minutes. Hunter-Reay led the ranking. However, shortly before the end of the race, he lost control of his vehicle and hit the barrier in the last corner. The training was canceled due to the accident. Hunter-Reay was unharmed. As a trigger for an abort, however, his two fastest laps were canceled. Saavedra took the lead and achieved the first pole position of his career. Before that, two ninth places were Saavedra's best qualifying results on street circuits. Hawksworth, who finished second, also achieved his best result in qualifying to date. Hunter-Reay's third fastest lap was enough for third place ahead of Pagenaud, Power and Dixon.
run
In contrast to the previous day, the race Saturday was consistently sunny. At the standing start, pole setter Saavedra stalled his engine and stopped on the starting position. After many drivers swerved in time, Carlos Muñoz and Aleshin drove into the vehicle at high speed. While all drivers were uninjured, Indianapolis Mayor Greg Ballard , who waved the starting flag, was hit by small parts and slightly injured. The three cars were badly damaged in the accident. The race was then neutralized. Montoya had stopped too. However, his vehicle was restarted so quickly that he never lost a lap. Mike Conway damaged his racing car while evading Saavedras vehicle and had his car repaired at the pits. He resumed the race but later gave up prematurely. Hunter-Reay had taken the lead at the start. To avoid the debris, the drivers first drove through the pit lane. Some drivers from the back field, who might have run over debris, changed their tires.
After the restart there were a few duels and overtaking maneuvers in the field. On the lap after the restart, Hunter-Reay lost his lead to Hawksworth, who was ahead for the first time in his fourth race. Hunter-Reay also fell behind Pagenaud and was third. Hawksworth set himself apart from the rest of the field that was spreading out over the next few laps. On the 27th lap, the drivers at the front began to pit. Hawksworth lost the lead to Hunter-Reay and Wilson. After all the drivers were in the pits, he was back in front of Pagenaud and Hunter-Reay. Hawksworth pulled away again in the next few laps and was five seconds ahead of Pagenaud in the 41st lap, who was over ten seconds ahead of Hunter-Reay.
Due to a collision between Power and Dixon, who were fighting for fourth place, there was another yellow phase on lap 42. Dixon paused in the gravel but resumed the race shortly afterwards. He lost a lap. At the top, the drivers are now using different strategies. While Hawksworth and Pagenaud pitted, with Pagenaud overtaking Hawksworth, Hunter-Reay fell by the wayside and took the lead again.
On the lap after the restart, in which Hunter-Reay stayed in front, there was another collision in the tenth corner, which triggered a yellow phase. Plowman braked himself, took off on the notch, and spun over the Montagny vehicle, the rear end of the vehicle floating. While Plowman was able to resume the race, Montagny was eliminated by this incident.
At the restart, Wilson took the lead. However, there was another caution one lap later after Montoya pushed Graham Rahal into the wall. Rahal was eliminated while Montoya continued. Montoya, who was lapped at this point, took the blame after the race. In the caution phase, some drivers, including Wilson, Hunter-Reay and Pagenaud, pitted, so that Castroneves, who did not stop, eventually took the lead. He kept the lead at the restart. In the lap after the restart, Hinchcliffe rolled out on the back straight without triggering a caution phase. Previously there were several minor contacts on the back straight where Hinchcliffe was likely hit by a small part. He suffered a concussion and was taken to the hospital.
Hawksworth, who was in third place, pitted on lap 61. A suboptimal strategy prevented a good finish in a race in which Hawksworth had completed the most leading laps. Wilson pitted too, as his front wing was damaged. In the 69th lap, Castroneves pitted and passed the lead for one lap to Bourdais. After he was refueling, Oriol Servià was in the lead. He was leading in front of Pagenaud and Hunter-Reay, and it was not clear whether the leading trio would run until the end of the race. Behind them were Castroneves and Bourdais, who had enough fuel and therefore drove as fast as possible. On the 78th lap, Servià pitted, so that Pagenaud took the lead. Pagenaud and Hunter-Reay drove so slowly that Dixon rounded back. However, both were so fast that Castroneves didn't come within striking distance and only reduced the gap.
Pagenaud won the race ahead of Hunter-Reay, Castroneves and Bourdais. Charlie Kimball was fifth, Briscoe sixth. The first six pilots were within ten seconds. Hawksworth finished seventh, his best IndyCar placement to date. Power, Satō and Tony Kanaan completed the top 10.
The first three positions in the drivers' championship remained unchanged, but the gaps narrowed.
The week after the Grand Prix, the Pagenaud and Castroneves teams were fined $ 1,000 . At Pagenaud there was uncleanliness on the underbody, at Castroneves on the differential. In addition, Chevrolet was fined US $ 20,000 for discovering a prohibited speed and traction control during the technical inspection. Chevrolet denied the use of traction control and appealed the penalty.
