Reports
background
After the Firestone 600 , Will Power led the drivers' standings with 39 points on Hélio Castroneves and with 60 points on Ryan Hunter-Reay .
The Shell and Pennzoil Grand Prix of Houston was the second of three events in which two races were held.
The Primary -Reifenmischung Firestone was with at the races in St. Petersburg , Long Beach and Detroit identical. The alternate tire compound was identical in all street course races.
There were two changes in the starting field. There was a planned driver change at Ed Carpenter Racing . Mike Conway , who competed in all street course races, replaced Ed Carpenter , who only drove the oval races. Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing fielded a second vehicle for Luca Filippi . Filippi was signed for two events.
With Sébastien Bourdais (twice), Scott Dixon and Power (once each) three former winners competed in this race.
training
In the first training session, which lasted 45 minutes, Power set the fastest time ahead of Simon Pagenaud and Bourdais. Graham Rahal braked before the eighth corner and drove Scott Dixon into the rear. The incident did not cause any interruption. The only interruption of the training was necessary due to the dissolving track surface. In the second practice session, which also lasted 45 minutes, Pagenaud took the lead. Ryan Briscoe finished second, Filippi third. The training was interrupted three times. First, Mikhail Aleshin spun in the fourth corner. Tony Kanaan then stalled his engine after a driving error on the start-finish straight. The third interruption was triggered by Jack Hawksworth , who went off the track in the chicane on the start-finish straight and crashed into the wall.
1. Qualifying
The first section of the first qualifying was held in two groups according to the usual qualifying system for street courses. The six fastest drivers in each group came into the second segment. The remaining starting positions were determined from the result of the first qualifying segment, with the drivers in the first group being assigned the odd positions from 13 and the drivers in the second group the even positions from 14. In the first group Pagenaud drove the fastest lap, in the second group Takuma Satō was the fastest driver. The championship leader Power was eliminated in the second group and reached 18th place on the grid. He had difficulty setting up the car.
In the second segment of the qualification, the six fastest drivers qualified for the final section. Satō achieved the fastest lap time. In addition to him, James Hinchcliffe , Castroneves, Dixon, Filippi and Pagenaud made it into the third part of qualifying, the so-called Firestone Fast Six.
Pagenaud ended up setting the fastest time, taking pole position ahead of Castroneves and Dixon. It was Pagenaud's first IndyCar pole in its 60th race.
1st race
Because of a heavy rain shower before the race, the race was not held over the planned race distance of 90 laps, but after a time limit of 110 minutes. The first race was started standing. The track was still wet, but dried off. Pagenaud kept the lead at the start ahead of Castroneves and Hinchcliffe. Satō made up two positions at the start and improved to fourth place. While Castroneves and Hinchcliffe fought for second place, Satō took advantage of a mistake of the two, and drove up to second place. On the fifth lap he finally took the lead from Pagenaud, whom he overtook on the sixth corner. In the early stages there was a collision between Marco Andretti and his team-mate Carlos Muñoz , in which Andretti, who had started from 16th place, lost further positions. Andretti was finally on the track in front of Satō and could not be lapped to stay in the leading lap. Andretti and his racing team Andretti Autosport were fined 2,500 US dollars each after the race because Andretti had disregarded the blue flags. Andretti also received a suspended sentence for the next three races.
Satō led the race in the first third of the race while the track dried off. On lap 27 he pitted to switch to dry tires. During the stops, Hinchcliffe and Justin Wilson led the race for one lap each. After all drivers drove on slicks, Hinchcliffe was again in the lead, as Satō's stop had taken a little longer. Before Satō was given an opportunity to overtake, the race was neutralized with the yellow flag, as Conway had driven into the tire wall in the third corner. Conway's vehicle wasn't badly damaged so he could continue driving. Just before Conway triggered the yellow phase, he turned Aleshin around, who lost a lap as a result.
At the restart, Hinchcliffe retained the lead. Aleshin, who was behind Satō but was one lap behind, tried to round back on the outside in the sixth corner. However, Satō overlooked Aleshin and collided with him. Both drivers retired and there was another caution period. Satō suffered a minor hand injury in the accident. At the restart, Filippi triggered the next yellow phase with an accident. He already lost control of his vehicle in the last corner, hit the wall on the right and then hit the pit wall on the left.
At the restart, Hinchcliffe stayed in the lead. About six laps later, Dixon collided with his teammate Charlie Kimball on the ninth corner. Pagenaud was also involved in the collision that triggered a yellow phase. Dixon dropped out straight away. Kimball drove a little farther and gave up a few laps later. Pagenaud lost several laps, but still reached the goal. In the yellow phase, Josef Newgarden gave up due to a technical defect.
Hinchcliffe defended the lead one more time at the restart. However, Power had an accident six laps later in the ninth corner and triggered another caution period. Power resumed the race one lap behind. During this racing phase Conway gave up due to a technical defect. Hinchcliffe pitted for his last stop on lap 60. Dale Coyne Racing decided to leave both drivers - Wilson and Carlos Huertas - on the track. Wilson, who last pitted on lap 28, took the lead from Huertas. After the restart, both Dale-Coyne vehicles initially pulled away. Juan Pablo Montoya , Kanaan and Rahal fought for third place .
On lap 74, Wilson pitted to refuel. Huertas took the lead in front of Montoya, whose push-to-pass attempts were already used up. The race was neutralized again on the 78th lap, as Sebastian Saavedra had been turned around by Briscoe on the fifth corner. Briscoe received a time penalty for the offense. The race was approaching the time limit, but a final release was planned. However, Rahal turned in fourth place, the third Kanaan in the ninth corner, so that the restart was canceled. Rahal was given a 30-second time penalty.
The race ended after 80 laps under yellow. Huertas won ahead of his Colombian compatriots Montoya and Muñoz. It was Huerta's first IndyCar win, as well as his third and final top 10 finish of the season. Huertas started the race from 19th place on the grid and had completed the last 39 laps on one tank of fuel and one set of tires. Huertas and Muñoz were both seven years old when Montoya won his first IndyCar race in 1999. Both drivers stated that Montoya had an impact on their early racing careers. Bourdais was fourth, Hinchcliffe fifth. Hawksworth, Hunter-Reay, Andretti, Castroneves and Wilson completed the top 10.
2nd qualifying
The second qualifying was held in two groups. Each group had twelve minutes each. The first place in a group received a bonus point for a pole position. The first place on the grid went to the faster of the two.
In the first group, Aleshin was the fastest ahead of Rahal and Wilson. Newgarden's two fastest lap times were dropped because he had hindered Montoya. In the second group, Castroneves set the fastest lap of the weekend ahead of Pagenaud and Bourdais.
Since Castroneves was the fastest overall, he got first place on the grid and all drivers in the second group were sorted into the odd starting places based on the qualifying order. The drivers of the first group got the even starting positions. It was Castroneve's 40th IndyCar pole position. This pulled him up to fourth position in the all-time best list with Rick Mears .
2nd race
In the early stages, Castroneves and Pagenaud drove away from the field. The previous day's winner Huertas retired in the third round due to a technical defect. Power made up ten positions within the first twenty laps. Due to the pit stop, Pagenaud took the lead once on lap 31. After the pit stops, Power was in third position. Castroneves defended himself hard against Pagenaud and received a warning. Aleshin ran into Rahal, who was slowing down, in the middle of the race and damaged the vehicle in the process, but drove on.
On lap 41, Muñoz had an accident on the start-finish straight and triggered a caution period. Muñoz dropped out. After the restart, Bourdais passed Power into third position. Pagenaud passed Castroneves. In the sixth corner Castroneves tried to take the lead. As he was about to overtake, he overlooked Bourdais and collided with him. This triggered a yellow phase and Castroneves was eliminated. Bourdais drove on, but its front wing was damaged.
At the restart, Pagenaud took the lead. Montoya passed Power and Bourdais, who lost both positions, to second. On the 63rd lap, Newgarden got stuck on the track with a technical defect. The drivers who had not yet pitted went to the pits. There was a yellow phase to recover the vehicle. Pagenaud was now ahead of Aleshin, Wilson, Hawksworth and Power. Montoya lost several positions at the pit stop, the drivers between Pagenaud and Power benefited from a different pit strategy.
At the restart, Hawksworth passed Wilson. Wilson was pushed into the tire wall by Andretti a little later, so that there was another yellow phase. Wilson drove on. At the next restart, Montoya passed Andretti and Power passed Hawksworth. Hawksworth and Montoya then dueled for several laps until Satō was eliminated in the eighth corner after an accident and triggered another yellow phase.
After the restart, Pagenaud and Aleshin stayed in the lead again. Aleshin retained his second position despite a creeping puncture. Power lost a few positions in the last two laps due to a damaged suspension and finally crossed the finish line in eleventh place. Filippi had an accident in the final laps, but there was no further caution. Hawksworth initially fought a duel with Montoya and Kimball, until Montoya finally lost a few positions.
Pagenaud eventually won ahead of teammates Aleshin and Hawksworth. It was the first podium finish for Aleshin and Hawksworth. Kimball finished fourth and Bourdais fifth. Hunter-Reay, Montoya, Briscoe, Andretti and Kanaan completed the top 10.
The first three positions in the drivers' championship remained unchanged.
