Reports
background
After the Pocono IndyCar 500 , Will Power led the drivers' standings without a lead over Hélio Castroneves and with 44 points over Simon Pagenaud .
Compared to previous editions of the Iowa Corn Indy, the distance has been increased by 50 laps to 300 laps.
The race took place under floodlights on Saturday evening.
With Tony Kanaan , Marco Andretti , Ryan Hunter-Reay and James Hinchcliffe , four former winners competed in this race. Andretti Autosport has been unbeaten at this Indy for four years .
training
Due to rain on Friday, the original plan, which included a 75-minute practice session, a qualifying session and a 30-minute final session, was modified. The final training was canceled and a second training was added between the first training and qualifying, and qualifying was postponed. The first workout lasted 15 minutes, the second 90 minutes.
In the first training session, Hinchcliffe was the fastest. Kanaan was second, Carlos Muñoz third.
In the second training session, Juan Pablo Montoya set the fastest time ahead of his teammates Power and Hinchcliffe.
Qualifying
The qualifying was held in the individual time trial. The starting order for the individual time trial was drawn. Each pilot drove two fast laps in a row. The average speed achieved in the process decided the order of the starting grid.
Scott Dixon was the fastest, taking pole position ahead of his teammates Kanaan and Castroneves. With Ryan Briscoe (4th place) and Charlie Kimball (7th place), all four Ganassi pilots made it into the top 10. Montoya, who was the fastest in training, only finished 19th on the grid.
run
The race was characterized by many wheel-to-wheel duels, which resulted from the characteristics of the track.
Dixon lost the lead in the first round and Kanaan took the lead. Due to rain, the race was neutralized with the yellow flag on the 33rd lap before it was interrupted on the 39th lap. After a break of 26 minutes, things continued behind the safety car. Before the race was released, the drivers pitted so that Castroneves was in the lead at the restart. At the restart, Mikhail Aleshin made a driver error. He triggered a collision in which he and Takuma Satō were eliminated.
In the 77th round, Kanaan again took the lead from Castroneves. Kanaan led the race for the next 170 races continuously. Due to debris in the third corner, the race was neutralized again for several laps on the 90th lap. In the meantime, Carlos Huertas had given up for health reasons. Montoya had to change his rear wing in the first third and lost a lap, which he made up later on.
Sebastian Saavedra had worked his way up to third position by starting from 17th place by lap 160. He brushed against the wall and triggered a yellow phase. He drove a few more laps, but gave up before the end of the race. In the meantime, Sébastien Bourdais was eliminated due to a technical problem. On the 230th lap, Andretti stopped on the back straight with an engine failure. To rescue the vehicle, the race was continued behind the safety car.
Seven laps after the restart, Kanaan lost the lead due to a pit stop for several laps to his team-mate Dixon. On the 281st lap, Ed Carpenter and Montoya collided in a duel for fifth place. Carpenter had overlooked Montoya and blocked. Montoya drove into the lane and retired. Carpenter admitted his mistake after the race. The race that had dominated Canaan up to that point then took a turn that turned the race on its head. Hunter-Reay and Josef Newgarden were called to the pits by their racing strategists Michael Andretti and Andy O'Gara on lap 284. Both drivers were then outside the top 10.
Hunter-Reay and Newgarden compared the rounds after the restart to a video game. Before the restart, Kanaan led Dixon, Castroneves and Power. Hunter-Reay and Newgarden overtook all other drivers in the last 11 laps after the restart. Hunter-Reay took the lead, Newgarden finished second. The other drivers had no chance against them on older tires.
Hunter-Reay, who was only two laps ahead, eventually won ahead of Newgarden. Kanaan finished third with 247 laps ahead of Dixon and Carpenter. Hinchcliffe, Graham Rahal , Castroneves, Briscoe and Kimball completed the top 10. This meant that all four Ganassi vehicles were in the top 10. Hunter-Reay won his third race of the season and Andretti Autosport achieved the fifth victory in a row at this event.
In the drivers' championship, Castroneves took the lead from Power, who was now second. Hunter-Reay improved to third place.
