Reports
background
After the Shell and Pennzoil Grand Prix of Houston , Will Power led the drivers' standings with 39 points on Hélio Castroneves and with 41 points on Ryan Hunter-Reay .
The Pocono IndyCar 500 was the second of three races for the Triple Crown . Double points were awarded for the race result. Compared to the previous year, the distance has been increased by 100 miles to 500 miles.
There were two scheduled changes in the starting field. There was a driver change at Ed Carpenter Racing . Ed Carpenter , who competed in all oval races, replaced Mike Conway , who only drove the street course races. Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing did not report the second vehicle in which Luca Filippi had raced at the last event.
With Scott Dixon , a former winner entered this race.
training
On Saturday, there were two training sessions of 60 minutes each before qualifying.
Tony Kanaan set the fastest time in the first practice session ahead of Hunter-Reay and Marco Andretti . The training was interrupted twice for the purpose of a route inspection.
In the second practice session, Power took the lead from Carlos Muñoz and Kanaan. Jack Hawksworth had a serious accident in the middle of training . He turned in the first corner and hit the wall with the left side of the vehicle. The vehicle was badly damaged. Hawksworth suffered a bruised heart muscle and was hospitalized for one night. He did not take part in qualifying or the race. As Bryan Herta Autosport did not report a replacement driver, Hawksworth received half the number of points for last place.
Qualifying
The qualifying was held in the individual time trial. The starting order for the individual time trial was drawn. Each pilot drove two fast laps in a row. The average speed achieved in the process decided the order of the starting grid.
Juan Pablo Montoya was the fastest, taking pole position ahead of Power and Muñoz. It was Montoya's first pole position after his IndyCar comeback. Josef Newgarden spun in the warm-up lap and touched the wall. So he did not set any time. The track got faster during the session, so the drivers who were drawn late on the grid benefited. Muñoz and Montoya were the last two riders to hit the track.
run
Power took the lead at the start of Montoya. Power, Montoya and Kanaan were alternately in the lead in the first three racing quarters. Sébastien Bourdais led the race for one lap. Takuma Satō and Carlos Huertas dropped out in the first half of the race due to a technical defect.
The race was only interrupted on lap 159. Graham Rahal had spun with a mechanical problem. Power was leading over Montoya at this point. While Power and Montoya stayed outside, Kanaan pitted. Ganassi tried to do without another stop, which would have been possible with a longer caution phase or further caution phases. Newgarden chose a similar strategy.
At the restart, Montoya attacked his team-mate Power in the battle for the lead. The two touched, with Montoya damaging the front wing. Montoya passed Power and led the race in front of him. With 25 laps to go, Power blocked his fellow teammate Castroneves in a duel for second position. The race management punished this offense with a drive-through penalty.
On the 188th lap Montoya pitted, so that Newgarden took the lead. Newgarden led to the 194th round. After that, Canaan led for two rounds. Kanaan achieved the most lead laps in this race and led an IndyCar race for the 101st time in his career. Montoya then took the lead again.
This Montoya won his first race in the IndyCar Series. His last IndyCar win was 13 years, 9 months and 20 days ago with the Motorola 300 2000 . It was Montoya's 12th IndyCar win. Before Montoya there were only two winners - Babe Stapp (1927, 1938) and John Paul Jr. (1983, 1998) who had over ten years between two IndyCar victories. Montoya's team-mate Castroneves finished second, Muñoz third. Ryan Briscoe and Dixon were fourth and fifth. Simon Pagenaud , Mikhail Aleshin , Newgarden, Andretti and Power completed the top 10. With his win, Montoya became the first IndyCar winner of the year to start from pole position. With an average speed of 202.402 mph (325.734 km / h), it was the third fastest IndyCar race in history, as well as the first 500-mile race with an average speed of over 200 mph (321.869 km / h).
Hunter-Reay, who won the first Triple Crown race, retired with a suspension damage in the final quarter of the race.
In the overall standings, Power remained in the lead, but his lead over Castroneves disappeared completely, leaving Castroneves tied in second place. Pagenaud took third position in the drivers' championship. Hunter-Reay, who was previously in third place, fell behind Montoya to fifth.
