In 2011 , Hildebrand was signed by Panther Racing and completed the entire season in the IndyCar Series. At the Indianapolis 500 he had taken the lead shortly before the end due to an extremely conservative driving style, after the other drivers had to refuel. In the last corner, however, he lost control of his car and hit the wall. He was overtaken by Dan Wheldon while sliding 275 meters from the finish line and finished in second place. At the last race of the season at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway , Hildebrand was involved in a mass accident in which 15 of 34 vehicles were eliminated and Wheldon was killed in an accident. Hildebrand suffered a bruise on the breastbone. At the end of the season he finished 14th in the drivers' championship. In the rookie classification he had to admit defeat to James Hinchcliffe with 296 to 302 points . After the season, Hildebrand underwent knee surgery that treated a cruciate ligament tear . He sustained the injury while doing non-racing activities shortly after the Indianapolis 500 and spent the remainder of the season with an injured knee.

In 2012 Hildebrand's Team Panther Racing competed with Chevrolet engines. With two fifth places as the best results, he was eleventh overall. Hildebrand was also initially under contract with Panther in 2013 . At the race in Long Beach he was fifth. After he was eliminated in the fourth lap with an accident at the Indianapolis 500 , he was fired from his racing team. For the GoPro Grand Prix of Sonoma he returned to the IndyCar Series for Bryan Herta Autosport . The engagement included two races. Hildebrand reached 25th place overall in the drivers' championship. In 2014 Hildebrand did not find a permanent cockpit. He only competed in the Indianapolis 500 . He started for Ed Carpenter Racing and finished tenth. He did not complete any other races. In 2015 Hildebrand was again without a full-time cockpit. He competed in two races for CFH Racing . Hildebrand only drove two races in the IndyCar Series 2016 . With Ed Carpenter Racing he finished sixth at the Indianapolis 500 . The following season he drove for Ed Carpenter all season. However, he could not start the race in Alabama because he broke a bone in his left hand in an accident in Long Beach and had to undergo surgery. In the following race he took third place. In Newton he reached the podium again with a second place. He finished the season in 15th place. In 2018 he had no cockpit for the full season and only competed in the Indy 500 for Dreyer & Reinbold Racing. He finished the race in eleventh place. In 2019 he finished the race in 20th place.
