The 96th Indianapolis 500 took place on May 27, 2012 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway in Speedway near Indianapolis , Indiana , United States and was the fifth race of the 2012 IndyCar Series season .

Dario Franchitti ( Target Chip Ganassi Racing ) won the race with a total time of 2: 58: 51.2532 hours ahead of his teammates Scott Dixon and Tony Kanaan ( KV Racing Technology w / SH ). After 2007 and 2010, it was Franchitti's third victory at the Indianapolis 500.

background

After the Itaipava São Paulo Indy 300 presented by Nestle , Will Power led the drivers' standings with 45 points ahead of Hélio Castroneves and 57 points on James Hinchcliffe . Among the engine manufacturers, Chevrolet led with 12 points ahead of Honda and with 20 points ahead of Lotus .

The Indianapolis 500 was the first race of the season on an oval course and the first oval race with the newly introduced Dallara DW12 chassis .

As the Indianapolis 500 has a special position on the racing calendar, no penalties for premature engine changes were imposed during the entire event. Usually, engine changes are penalized with a penalty of 10 starting positions if they were not necessary due to engine failure in a race. All engine changes during this event were sanctioned under the Indianapolis 500.

With Castroneves (three times), Dario Franchitti (twice) and Scott Dixon (once) three former Indianapolis 500 winners competed. In addition, Rubens Barrichello , a driver who won a Formula 1 race on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Grand Prix circuit , took part in the Indianapolis 500 for the first time . Castroneves was the most experienced pilot with his twelfth start at the Indianapolis 500. With Jean Alesi , Barrichello, Bryan Clauson , Wade Cunningham , James Jakes , Katherine Legge , Josef Newgarden and Simon Pagenaud , eight drivers started the race for the first time. Newgarden was the youngest competitor at 21 years old and Alesi the oldest competitor at 47 years and 351 days. Alesi also became the oldest rookie . Jack Hewitt previously held this age record. He was 46 years and 320 days old when he made his Indianapolis 500 debut in 1998. 33 drivers from 13 nations took part in the event. With nine drivers, the United States had the largest number of participants.

It was the first time since 1947 that the reigning Indianapolis 500 winner no longer saw the event. Last year's winner, Dan Wheldon , passed away during the preseason .

procedure

The Indianapolis 500, including the training sessions, extended over a period of 18 days. The event began on May 10 with Rookie and Refresher Day , on which newcomers and those returning who have not competed in oval races for a long time complete a training program. Every rookie and refresher had to do 10 laps at constant speed between 200 and 205 mph and 15 laps at constant speed between 205 and 210 mph that day. For the remainder of the practice session, each of these riders had to complete 15 laps at a speed of at least 210 mph.

From May 12th to 18th, there were seven free training days, each with six hours of training time per day. Qualifying began on May 19th. First there was a two-hour free practice session. Then, in a five-hour qualifying session, the first 24 drivers to qualify for the race were determined. Finally, the first nine drivers drove out the first nine starting positions among themselves in a 90-minute session. The following day was the so-called bump day . After a one-hour free practice session, the remaining nine starting positions were allocated in a six-hour qualifying session. All pilots who would not have been in the top 33 would not have qualified for the 500 mile race. On May 25th was the so-called Carb-Day with a one hour free training. The Indianapolis 500 finally took place on May 27th.

In contrast to all other races in the Indianapolis 500, every driver who qualified received points for the qualifying result.

Changes in the starting field

For the Indianapolis 500 there were some changes in the starting field. Several teams deployed other vehicles.

  • Dragon Racing also parted ways with Lotus ahead of the event . According to consistent media reports, Dragon filed a claim for damages against Lotus in the amount of 4.6 million US dollars for breach of contract. The racing team switched to Chevrolet and only entered the event on the sixth day of training.
  • Rahal Letterman Lanigan also used a second vehicle. Before the start of the season, Luca Filippi , who has a contract with the racing team, was scheduled for this cockpit and he should enter the championship from this race. However, the cockpit was given to returnees Michel Jourdain Jr. forgive. Jourdain started the Indianapolis 500 in 1996. It was his only start in this race so far. From 1996 to 2004 he was active in the Champ Car series. He achieved his best overall placement in 2003 for the Rahal team with a third place.
  • Andretti Autosport expanded its regular driver trio for this race. Sebastian Saavedra , who drove in Andretti Autosport's Indy Lights team, received a car that had been registered with AFS Racing . Saavedra drove almost the entire IndyCar season in 2011. In addition, Ana Beatriz , who had already received an additional car in the previous race, stayed in the team. Your car was used in this race together with Conquest Racing .
  • Jean Alesi , who competed in 201 Grand Prix in Formula 1 from 1989 to 2001 , competed in the IndyCar Series for the first time. He was a brand ambassador for the manufacturer Lotus . Originally, Newman / Haas Racing was intended for its use. However, this engagement did not materialize because the team withdrew its registration for the race at the end of April. According to the team, the preparation time was too short. Eventually, the Indy Lights team Fan Force United took over Alesi. A co-owner of Fan Force United was former IRL pilot Tyce Carlson . Greg Beck , who was formerly represented in the IndyCar Series with his racing team, Beck Motorsports , acted as chief mechanic . The team also employed a few mechanics who had already won the Indianapolis 500 with other teams.
  • In addition, Ed Carpenter Racing originally reported another vehicle. However, this was not occupied.
  • Originally, MSR Indy also wanted to debut in the race in the IndyCar Series. Jay Howard had already been chosen as the driver . However, Howard was finally released from the team in early May because it couldn't find an engine manufacturer.
  • Dario Franchitti from the Target Chip Ganassi Racing team did not enter the Indianapolis 500 with his usual starting number, 10, but with 50. The reason for the one-time change of numbers was the 50th anniversary of the title sponsor Target .

First section (Top 24)

In the first section of qualifying, the first 24 drivers qualified for the Indianapolis 500. The first nine drivers qualified for the decisive qualifying for pole position. Four flying laps were driven in a row and the total time and average speed were determined. The drivers were individually on the track.

Tony Kanaan made the first attempt . However, his car fell through the technical inspection and the time was canceled.

After there was a slight contact with the wall during the week, there were three flights in this qualifying. On the last of four laps, Bryan Clauson lost the rear of his vehicle and hit the barrier hard on his back. He was able to get out of his car on his own. With the average speed he had achieved up to then, he would certainly have qualified. Then Ed Carpenter and Oriol Servià also had an accident . All three pilots were uninjured. Carpenter said after qualifying that he would not take off the gas the next day and that he would also accept the loss of another car. In addition to his replacement car, Carpenter also had the number 21 car, for which no pilot was reported. Clauson, however, did not have his own replacement vehicle. However, his Sarah Fisher Hartman Racing team had a second vehicle for his teammate Josef Newgarden . Sarah Fisher Hartman Racing suffered financial damage "between 200,000 and 250,000 US dollars" as a result of the destroyed vehicle, according to team boss Andy O'Gara , Sarah Fisher's husband .

At Chip Ganassi Racing , Graham Rahal and Charlie Kimball from the B-Team were ahead of their teammates Scott Dixon and Dario Franchitti , who turned 39 that day, from the A-Team. No Ganassi vehicle made it into the top 9.

James Hinchcliffe was the fastest pilot ahead of Will Power and Ryan Hunter-Reay . Newgarden was the only Honda- powered driver to make it into the top nine. The two Lotus drivers Jean Alesi and Simona de Silvestro made no qualifying attempt. De Silvestro saw no chance of qualifying and therefore wanted to concentrate on the next day. The last pilot to qualify that day was Sebastian Saavedra .

Pole setter Ryan Briscoe during his qualification attempt
Qualifying first three: James Hinchcliffe, Ryan Briscoe and Ryan Hunter-Reay (left to right)

The pole position was extended to among the first nine drivers of the first section. Ryan Briscoe set the fastest time, beating James Hinchcliffe by 2.3 thousandths of a second. It was the closest gap ever in the duel for pole position at the Indianapolis 500. It was Briscoe's first pole position in the Indianapolis 500 and the first pole position for an Australian in that race.

Hinchcliffe's team-mates Ryan Hunter-Reay and Marco Andretti were in third and fourth place . In fifth and sixth place Briscoes teammates Will Power and Hélio Castroneves . This meant that only Penske and Andretti drivers and drivers with a Chevrolet engine were in the first six positions. In seventh position followed with Josef Newgarden, the first driver to use a Honda engine. The KV Racing Technology pilots Tony Kanaan and EJ Viso did not set any time.

The pole sitter received a bonus of 100,000 US dollars , the second $ 50,000 and third $ 40,000.

Hinchcliffe carried the original gloves of his fellow countryman Greg Moore, who died in an accident at the Auto Club Speedway in 1999, with him during his qualification participation. Moore never participated in the Indianapolis 500.

Bump Day (May 20th)

Qualifying

The boost pressure remained at 1.4 bar that day.

Since there were only 33 applicants for 33 starting places, there was no risk of a pilot failing to qualify with a slow lap. The teams of drivers who had an accident yesterday managed the repairs on time, with only Ed Carpenter needing a replacement vehicle.

Sébastien Bourdais achieved the fastest average speed. If he had achieved this result the day before, he would have finished 15th on the grid. Wade Cunningham was second ahead of Oriol Servià .

Up until Bump Day there were rumors that Jay Howard or Pippa Mann could jump in on the spot. However, neither of the two received a cockpit at short notice. Howard, who had a few sponsors but was without a cockpit, announced on Bump Day that he actually had an engine contract, but the manufacturer had dropped this agreement. Mann had been on the track since the start of training, but was not given a cockpit either.

At the last practice session before the race, on Carb Day , the boost pressure was reduced to 1.3 bar again. In the meantime, there were considerations that the two vehicles with Lotus engines should continue to run with an increased boost pressure of 1.4 bar. For reasons of equal opportunities and security, however, it was refrained from. However, IndyCar race director Beaux Barfield announced that the lap times of the Lotus vehicles will be observed in the race. All participants had to be able to drive a time that was within the 105 percent rule . In the practice sessions and in qualifying, the Lotus drivers were not able to do this.

Chassis manufacturer Dallara modified the Dallara DW12 for this training course and thus reacted to previous accidents in which some cars were slightly lifted off. The cause was assumed to be the lateral stiffness of the underwing support. Dallara added three slots in the underwing support. IndyCar justified the step in a report as follows: “ This is intended to reduce the lateral rigidity and maintain the vertical rigidity. "

Dario Franchitti set the fastest time ahead of Scott Dixon and Marco Andretti . All qualified participants set a time.

report

Before the start of the race, there was a memorial event for last year's winner Dan Wheldon , who died in an accident in October 2011 . His widow and one of his sons were there for this. Wheldon's former team boss Bryan Herta drove his winning car around the track in a lap of honor. White sunglasses, a trademark of Wheldon, had been distributed to the audience. 300,000 spectators attended the world's largest one-day sporting event on race Sunday.

In the early stages of the Indianapolis 500 there was a duel between the first two drivers of qualifying: Ryan Briscoe and James Hinchcliffe , with Briscoe leading most of the time.

After just a few laps, it became apparent that the Lotus drivers Jean Alesi and Simona de Silvestro were not setting competitive lap times. Their average speed was roughly 205 mph, while average speeds of 217 mph were possible at the top. Therefore, the race management around Beaux Barfield decided to take the two drivers out of the race on lap 10 because their times were not within the 105 percent rule . While Alesi reacted with displeasure to the decision, de Silvestro showed understanding for the disqualification. Alesi also ignored the disqualification and fell by the wayside for another lap. Therefore, two laps were deducted from him in the final classification.

In the 14th lap there was the first caution because Bryan Clauson had turned. He initially drove on, but gave up after 46 laps with technical problems. In the caution phase, the drivers made their first pit stop. EJ Viso and Dario Franchitti came into contact in the box , and Franchitti was shot. His front wing was damaged in the process. He had to change this and fell back on 28th place. After the restart, Marco Andretti took the lead for several laps. On the 24th lap Oriol Servià dropped out of the lead lap after a puncture.

At the top there was a duel between Andretti and Scott Dixon . Dixon benefited from the lower fuel consumption of its Honda engine, while Andretti had to stop earlier with a Chevrolet engine. At this stage of the race there were two green stops. In the meantime, Wade Cunningham had given up the race with technical problems.

As a result of the pit stops, the first serious accident occurred in the race. Mike Conway had damaged his front wing during his pit stop as he hit members of his pit crew on the entrance. He drove back onto the track and noticed in turns 3 and 4 that his front wing was no longer intact. In the first corner he tried to slow down, but with Will Power behind him, Conway couldn't slow down too much. Conway eventually lost control of his vehicle and collided with Power. As a result of the contact, Conway's vehicle brushed the wall at a 90 ° angle and a wheel came loose. It flew through the air and narrowly missed Hélio Castroneves . Conway and Power were uninjured, but the race was over for them. Conway said after the race that it was his mistake.

After the restart, the next caution phase came just a few laps later. This time Ana Beatriz had contact with the wall. However, her car was not as badly damaged and she resumed racing. In the yellow phase, the teams chose different strategies. Andretti and Satō pitted and dropped to eleven and twelve, Dixon and Franchitti stayed out and Dixon took the lead. Meanwhile, Ryan Hunter-Reay , who had started from third place, had retired with technical problems.

At the restart, Satō improved to fifth place and he was finally in the lead for several laps. There was another phase of pit stops under green. In front was a group of four around Dixon, Franchitti, Satō and Andretti. Andretti had to pit earlier again. Since his team-mate Sebastian Saavedra then stopped on the track, there was another yellow phase and Andretti fell out of the top 10. It was similar for JR Hildebrand , who also fell out of the top 10. 13 laps after the end of this yellow phase, Josef Newgarden triggered another yellow phase. Like Saavedra, he stopped on the road.

At the top there was now a duel between Ganassi pilots Dixon and Franchitti. Behind them Ed Carpenter , Satō and Justin Wilson battled for positions. Carpenter finally said goodbye to the leading group on lap 180 as he spun on the track. This triggered another yellow phase. A few laps after the restart, Tony Kanaan finally took the lead, which he held for several laps, as Andretti had an accident and made another caution period necessary. Like Carpenter, he lost control of his vehicle on the first corner. Andretti came onto the white line in this corner and was no longer able to maintain control of his car.

At the restart, which was the last restart of this race, Franchitti prevailed and took the lead in front of Dixon, Satō and Kanaan. A lap later, his teammate Dixon managed to take first position. On the 198th lap, Franchitti finally overtook Dixon and took the lead of the race. Satō also passed Dixon. On the last lap, Satō dared to attack Franchitti in the first corner. In a close duel, Satō crossed the white line on the inside of the curve and lost control of his vehicle. He hit the barrier. The race was then finished under yellow. Instead of his first victory, Satō was ranked 17th. While Satō saw the blame for the accident at Franchitti, which in his opinion had left him too little space, Franchitti was of the opinion that he had not pushed Satō down and that Satō had lost control of his author. Dixon and Kanaan, who drove behind the two, saw the blame for the accident on Sato.

Franchitti eventually won ahead of teammates Dixon and Kanaan. The three pilots drove across the finish line in parallel. Franchitti won the Indianapolis 500 for the third time in his career after 2007 and 2010. He became the first European and a total of tenth pilot to win the Indianapolis 500 at least three times. With this victory he drew level with Sébastien Bourdais and Paul Tracy , who had achieved 31 victories across the series in the highest class of American formula racing. Franchitti dedicated the victory to his late friend Dan Wheldon. Dixon said after the race that the lower fuel consumption of the Honda engine was decisive for the race.

Servia, who made it back into the leading lap in the closing stages of the race, was fourth ahead of Briscoe, Hinchcliffe, Wilson, Charlie Kimball , Townsend Bell and Castroneves. Rubens Barrichello , who had led the race for two laps, was the best newcomer in eleventh place. Servia was the driver who made up the most positions in the race. Hinchcliffe had lost touch with the leaders due to a failed pit stop.

Power kept the championship lead from Castroneves and Hinchcliffe. Franchitti improved from tenth to sixth place. With the manufacturers, positions remained unchanged, with Honda winning for the first time of the season.

Overall, in this race premiums totaling 13,285,815 were US dollars distributed. All pilots received at least $ 250,000 in bonuses. The winner, Franchitti, received $ 2,474,280, Dixon $ 1,102,280, and Kanaan in third place 636,580. Bell, in ninth place, received the lowest award at $ 251,305. With an official temperature of 91 degrees Fahrenheit (32.8 degrees Celsius ), this Indianapolis 500 was the second hottest in history along with the races of 1919 and 1953.

The race generated in the United States the best TV audience since 2008. In the overnight ratings of Nielsen Media Research, the race with 4.3 rated, ahead of which takes place on the same day NASCAR - Sprint Cup -race Coca- Cola 600 , which was rated 4.1.
