The 2012 Iowa Corn Indy 250 took place on June 23rd at Iowa Speedway in Newton , Iowa , United States and was the ninth race of the 2012 IndyCar Series .
Reports
background
After the Milwaukee IndyFest , Will Power led the drivers' standings by 31 points over James Hinchcliffe and 35 points over Scott Dixon . Among the engine manufacturers, Chevrolet led with 6 points ahead of Honda and with 31 points ahead of Lotus .
The rear wing of the Dallara DW12 was adapted for this race. He was allowed to have a maximum angle of 37 ° and not use a Gurney Flap . In addition, an additional camera was installed for the starts and restarts, which is synchronized with the timing and video system. The IndyCar Series wanted to prevent wrong decisions about offenses in this phase.
The qualifying mode for this race has been changed. Instead of the customary single time trial on ovals, the starting grid was determined by so-called heat races . The field was divided into three groups based on the result of the second training session. The even starting positions from tenth place onwards were assigned to the first group, the odd starting positions from ninth place onwards to the second group and places one to eighth on the third group. The division into the groups was based on the same criteria. Each heat race lasted 30 laps.
With Dario Franchitti (twice), Tony Kanaan and Marco Andretti (once each), three former winners competed in this race.
training
In the first practice session, Andretti achieved the fastest lap time ahead of Josef Newgarden and Alex Tagliani . The second training determined the division into the three qualification groups. Andretti was again the fastest pilot. Franchitti was second ahead of Hélio Castroneves . For the third group of the first eight, three drivers each from the Penske and Andretti Autosport teams and two drivers from Chip Ganassi Racing qualified .
Qualifying
1st heat race
In the first heat race, the straight starting positions were awarded from position ten. Graham Rahal took a start-to-finish victory ahead of Newgarden and JR Hildebrand . With Rahal and EJ Viso , two pilots of this heat race were penalized by ten positions due to an early engine change.
2nd heat race
In the second heat race, the odd starting positions were awarded from position nine. First, Rubens Barrichello led the race. In the sixth lap he lost the lead to Tagliani. This was ahead until the 20th lap. In this, Canaan took the lead. Kanaan eventually won the race ahead of Tagliani and Barrichello. In this group, Kanaan and Simon Pagenaud were penalized by ten positions for an early engine change.
3rd heat race
In the third heat race, the pole position and the first eight starting positions were extended. Andretti initially led the race. In the eighth lap, Franchitti dared to attack the outside lane and took the lead. Castroneves also managed to drive past Andretti shortly afterwards.
Franchitti finally won ahead of Castroneves and Andretti and thus achieved pole position. Hinchcliffe and Ryan Briscoe fought for fourth place on the last lap, with Hinchcliffe staying in front. The remaining places went to Power, Ryan Hunter-Reay and Dixon.
run
The Iowa Corn Indy 250 was a floodlit race. The start was originally planned for 9 p.m. local time. However, due to rain showers, the start was delayed by about an hour. Pole-setter Dario Franchitti fell out with an engine failure in the introductory laps. Tagliani also stayed on the track, so the race started with a caution period. Tagliani took up the race behind, however.
Castroneves initially led the race ahead of Hinchcliffe, Hunter-Reay, Briscoe, Andretti and Power. Hildebrand had contact with Hunter-Reay at the start, which meant a front wing change for Hildebrand. As a result, he lost three laps on the leading driver.
Hinchcliffe took the lead from Castroneves in the 52nd round, who then defended himself against Hunter-Reay. Justin Wilson had meanwhile taken fourth place. In the 68th lap there was another yellow phase when Viso and Power collided. Both were eliminated. During the caution period, Castroneves took the lead again, which he held for many laps.
Around the 100th round there was another yellow phase and two more failures. Hildebrand had an accident on Turn 1 and Oriol Servià finally gave up with electronic problems. In this caution phase, Dixon and Briscoe completed another pit stop, during which they did not lose many places, as only 13 drivers were still in the lead at this point. Even Mike Conway was little to technical problems.
Then there was a longer green phase in which Castroneves, Hunter-Reay, Andretti, Hinchcliffe and Kanaan were in the top 5. In sixth place was Pagenaud, who had started from last place. Due to their strategy, Dixon and Briscoe fell by the wayside longer. When Dixon pitted, Briscoe was the only pilot on the lead lap. However, shortly afterwards he collided with Newgarden, which ended the race for both of them.
At the restart, Dixon, who had made his last stop shortly before the caution period and thus benefited from the stops made by the competitors, was in the lead. A few laps after the restart, Hinchcliffe turned into the wall and triggered another yellow phase. While Dixon was put under pressure by Hunter-Reay and Andretti after the restart, while in the lead, Tagliani retired with technical problems. 13 laps before the end of the race, Hunter-Reay took over the lead from Dixon and Andretti also passed him. A few laps later, Dixon lost another position to Canaan.
Katherine Legge finally triggered another caution phase with a spin three laps before the end of the race. The race ended under this.
Hunter-Reay won ahead of Andretti and the two racing drivers achieved a double victory for Andretti Autosport. Kanaan was third ahead of Dixon. Pagenaud finished the race in fifth place. The top 10 completed Castroneves, Barrichello, Ed Carpenter , Rahal and Wilson.
Hunter-Reay caught up to three points on Power in the overall standings and took second place. Dixon kept third place. Within a week Hunter-Reay had won 102 points from two races with two wins, Power scored 30 points in these two races. The positions of the manufacturers remained unchanged.
