Reports
background
After the Indianapolis 500 , Will Power led the drivers' standings by 36 points over Hélio Castroneves and James Hinchcliffe . Among the engine manufacturers, Chevrolet led with 9 points ahead of Honda and with 22 points ahead of Lotus .
In the week before the Grand Prix was IndyCar - CEO Randy Bernard announced that some team bosses would try to secure his release. On the Saturday before the race there was a meeting between Bernard and the team owners, at which the team owners finally signaled their support to Bernard.
Since the Indianapolis 500 had no penalties for early engine changes due to its special position in the racing calendar, these were made up for at the Chevrolet Detroit Belle Isle Grand Prix. This concerned Graham Rahal and Simona de Silvestro .
There have been a few changes in the starting field compared to the last race. The number of participants fell from 33 to 25 drivers. All pilots and teams that had only started at the Indianapolis 500 this season were no longer there. In addition, Dragon Racing had reduced its team. Instead of two cars, the team only used one from this event. Sébastien Bourdais was to take the non-oval courses and Katherine Legge the oval courses. The reason for the reduction to one vehicle was the change of the team from the engine manufacturer Lotus to Chevrolet, which at the time of this race only had capacity for 13 vehicles outside the Indianapolis 500. Lotus entered this race for the first time with only one vehicle.
With Castroneves (twice), Dario Franchitti , Tony Kanaan and Justin Wilson (once each) four former winners competed for this Grand Prix.
training
In the first practice session, only 9 out of 25 pilots set a time because it was very wet on the track. Takuma Satō drove the fastest lap ahead of Rubens Barrichello and Wilson. In the second practice session, which took place under dry conditions, Power set the fastest time ahead of Wilson and Ryan Briscoe . The training was interrupted twice after a twist by Scott Dixons and after de Silvestro rolled out.
In the third training session, Dixon took the lead in front of Power and Ryan Hunter-Reay . The meeting was suspended three times. Twice because of a spin from Briscoe or Franchitti and once because of a departure from Oriol Servià . Servià damaged his car so badly that he no longer drove back onto the track.
Qualifying
The first part of the time training was held in two groups. The six fastest drivers in each group came into the second segment. The remaining starting positions were determined from the result of the first qualifying segment, with the drivers in the first group being assigned the odd positions from 13 and the drivers in the second group the even positions from 14. In the first group Dixon drove the fastest lap, in the second group Power was the fastest driver.
In the second segment of the qualification, the six fastest drivers qualified for the final section. Power achieved the fastest lap. In the final section, called the Firestone Fast Six , Dixon was the fastest ahead of Power. The two pilots were 4.4 thousandths of a second apart. This is the first time that no Penske driver has achieved pole position this season . The top 6 were completed by Alex Tagliani , Simon Pagenaud , EJ Viso and Hunter-Reay.
Final training
In the final practice session on Sunday morning, Graham Rahal was the fastest driver on the track. His team mate Dixon was second ahead of Power.
run
At the start, Dixon kept the lead over Power and Pagenaud. Tagliani, who was originally supposed to start the race from third place, remained in the pits with electrical problems and finally followed the field. Wilson had an accident on the first lap. In the process, he damaged the suspension. After a lengthy repair stop, he resumed the race. He posted the fastest lap of the race. After a total of 28 laps, however, he had to finally park the vehicle with technical problems.
In the initial phase, Dixon and Power at the front set themselves apart from the rest of the field. Pagenaud distanced Dixon by about 14 seconds. Behind it there was a bigger gap to Viso, who was up to 35 seconds behind Dixon in this phase. As overtaking maneuvers on the track were difficult, Viso held up to twelve vehicles behind him in fourth place. Hunter-Reay was right behind Viso. On the tenth lap, Briscoe tried to get past Hunter-Reay, but Hunter-Reay blocked the overtaking attempt. Hunter-Reay was warned for this by the race management. On the 28th lap, when Viso pitted, Hunter-Reay finally passed him. The leaders Dixon and Power pitted on lap 32. They kept the first two positions in the same order. At this point Rubens Barrichello , Bourdais and James Jakes had already left with technical problems.
Shortly before half-way through the race, there were two independent accidents on lap 39, which initially triggered a caution phase. Satō drove aggressively over the curbs in Turn 12 and lost control of his vehicle. He ended up in the lane. At the same time, James Hinchcliffe drove into the lane at Turn 7. The trigger for this was the pavement coming off. Hinchcliffe was furious and said, “ I've never seen anything like it. I came around the corner. Suddenly I saw that the route had broken out. A piece of it got under my car and I couldn't turn back. On the previous lap, I hit a piece at turn nine that was thrown up by Graham Rahal. It's a joke. “Hinchcliffe also compared the situation to Russian roulette .
The asphalt was damaged in several sections similar to the curve where Hinchcliffe had an accident. Race director Beaux Barfield finally interrupted the race on lap 45 with the red flag. Franchitti suspected the high grip level of the Dallara DW12 to be the trigger for the detaching track surface . The defective pavement was removed and replaced with a new one. The race was resumed after about two hours. However, the race distance was reduced from 90 to 60 laps, so that 15 laps still had to be completed. When the race resumed, light rain set in. Driving on slicks was still possible.
Dixon led the field before the restart in front of Power, Pagenaud, Kanaan, Castroneves and Franchitti. Dixon kept the lead at the restart, Power was overtaken by Pagenaud. Franchitti improved to fourth place. Finally, at turn six, Castroneves and Ed Carpenter collided . Josef Newgarden also turned . There was thus another yellow phase. At the restart, Franchitti retained the lead again. His teammate Franchitti passed Power and Pagenaud and took second place. However, there was another caution phase because Viso and Marco Andretti collided in turn five. At the following restart the positions at the top remained unchanged.
Dixon eventually scored a start-to-finish victory ahead of Franchitti and Pagenaud. After three second places in the previous races, it was Dixon's first win of the season. As in the previous race, it was a double victory for Ganassi . It is the first time since several engine manufacturers joined in that the first three pilots all used the same engine. At Chevrolet's home race, three Honda engines were in front. Franchitti completed the race with a flu virus .
The top 10 completed Power, Servià, Kanaan, Hunter-Reay, Charlie Kimball , Mike Conway and Tagliani.
Power kept the lead in the drivers' championship. Dixon took second place from Castroneves, who dropped to third place. The positions of the manufacturers remained unchanged.
Registration list
All teams and drivers used the chassis Dallara DW12 with an aero kit from Dallara and tires from Firestone .
