Michel Jourdain junior (born September 2, 1976 in Mexico City ) is a Mexican racing driver . It started in the CART series from 1996 to 2004 . His best overall placement was third. He also competed in the NASCAR Nationwide Series , the World Touring Car Championship (WTCC) and the World Rally Championship (WRC).

He is the son of Michel Jourdain senior and a nephew of Bernard Jourdain .

Career

Michel Jourdain junior began his motorsport career in formula racing in 1987 in the Mexican Formula Junior . He stayed in this racing series for four years and finished fourth overall in 1989. In 1991 he switched to the Mexican Formula 2 championship . He started half a season and was 17th overall. He also took part in the Mexican Formula K Endurance Series . Jourdain stayed in the Mexican Formula 2 Championship for the next four years. He improved his overall placements. After a 15th place in 1992, a twelfth place in 1993 and an eighth place in 1994, he was third in the championship in 1995. He also took part in the Mexican Delvac Cup and the Mexican Tecate Cup from 1993 to 1995 .

In 1996 Jourdain was without a permanent cockpit. In the Indy Racing League , he went to two races for Team Scandia , including the Indianapolis 500 . He was 20th in the drivers' championship . In the Indy Car World Series he took part in six events for Dick Simon Racing and reached 37th overall . In the 1996/1997 season of the Indy Racing League he started for Team Scandia for the race in Las Vegas and achieved second place. For 1997 Jourdain received a cockpit for the entire season at Payton / Coyne Racing in the CART series, the former Indy Car World Series . With a 13th place as the best result, he finished the season in 29th place. In 1998 Jourdain stayed with Payton / Coyne Racing. With a tenth place he reached a top 10 position. He was 24th in the drivers' championship. Within the team, he scored more points than his teammates Gualter Salles and Dennis Vitolo , who shared a cockpit. In 1999 Jourdain denied his third season for Payton / Coyne Racing and was again the only driver of the team, which sometimes used three cars, who contested every race. With a seventh place he achieved his best CART result to date. In the overall standings, he finished the season in 25th place.

In 2000 Jourdain moved to Bettenhausen Racing within the CART series , which only used one driver. With an eighth and a seventh place he came into the top 10 twice and finished the season in 22nd place overall. 2001 Jourdain stayed with Bettenhausen Racing. He achieved three top 10 results and finished third in Brooklyn for the first time on the podium. He finished 20th in the drivers' championship.

In 2002 Jourdain was signed by Team Rahal as a teammate of former champion Jimmy Vasser . While Vasser finished the season with a win in seventh place, Jourdain improved to tenth place in the drivers' standings. Three fourth places were his best results. In 14 of 19 races he finished in the top 10. In 2003 Jourdain stayed with Team Rahal, which only used one vehicle. After three podium finishes, he won his first CART race at the West Allis race. In Montreal he scored another victory. In the championship he was third with 195 points behind Paul Tracy (226 points) and Bruno Junqueira (199 points). After the Rahal team had left the CART series and the series had been renamed the Champ Car World Series , Jourdain switched to RuSPORT in 2004 and became AJ Allmendinger's teammate . A second place in Vancouver was his best result. Internally, he lost to Allmendinger, who was the best rookie in sixth, with 185 to 229 points and finished the championship in twelfth place.

In 2005 Jourdain left formula racing and switched to NASCAR . He took part in the Busch Series and was 37. He also started a race in the West Series . In 2006 Jourdain only took part in individual races in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series , the NASCAR Busch Series and the Rolex Sports Car Series .

In 2007 Jourdain competed in the World Touring Car Championship (WTCC) as a Seat factory driver. With a sixth place he achieved a point placement and was 18th in the world championship. He also took part in two races in the NASCAR Busch Series and one race in the Rolex Sports Car Series. At the end of the year he took part in four A1GP races of the 2007/2008 season for the Mexican team . A 13th place was his best result. In 2008 he started a race in the NASCAR Nationwide Series, the former Busch Series. In a total of 26 Nationwide races he achieved a top 10 placement. He also took part in a race in the American Le Mans Series (ALMS) that year. After a one-year break, Jourdain took part in two races of the Turismos de Resistencia in 2010, a Mexican touring car series.

His main focus in 2010 and 2011 was not on circuit racing, but on rallying . In both years he took part in rallies, including the World Rally Championship (WRC). In the WRC, a 14th place was his best result.

In 2012 Jourdain returned to the American monoposto sport. At Rahal Letterman Lanigan , the former Rahal team, he received a cockpit for the Indianapolis 500 . His last start in the IndyCar Series, the former Indy Racing League, was in 1996. In the race, he finished 19th. In 2013 Jourdain received another cockpit from Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing for the Indianapolis 500 . However, he failed to qualify. Jourdain described the car as undrivable. His team failed to pinpoint the problem. Jourdain's team-mate Graham Rahal also failed to manage a competitive time with this vehicle.

Personal

Michel Jourdain junior is not the only racing driver in his family. His father Michel Jourdain senior and his uncle Bernard Jourdain were both active in the CART series.
