Reports
background
After the Honda Indy 200 at Mid-Ohio , Hélio Castroneves led the drivers' standings with 31 points over Scott Dixon and 65 points over Ryan Hunter-Reay .
At the GoPro Grand Prix of Sonoma 2013, the drivers were allowed a total of 150 seconds to use the push-to-pass button. The overtaking aid could be activated ten times during the race.
There were three changes in the starting field. Ryan Briscoe returned to Panther Racing after an IndyCar racing weekend break . Briscoe had to pause for about a month before this race due to a fracture in his right wrist in an accident in Toronto . Briscoe replaced Oriol Servià as his representative . At Bryan Herta Autosport , Luca Filippi handed the car over to JR Hildebrand . Hildebrand last worked for Panther Racing at the Indianapolis 500 . He lost his cockpit after being eliminated in an accident early in the race. Hildebrand had received a contract with Bryan Herta Autosport for this race and the season finale in Fontana . In addition, Sarah Fisher Hartman Racing reported a second vehicle that was used together with RW Motorsport . Lucas Luhr received the racing car. Luhr made his debut in the IndyCar Series in Sonoma and has been participating in a formula race again for over ten years. Luhr won the P1 drivers' championship in the American Le Mans Series in 2012 and also led this in 2013 at the time of the race. Luhr was the first driver of the IndyCar Series from Germany . On the other hand, there was no change at Dale Coyne Racing in the vehicle with the number 18. James Davison , who was supposed to complete a one-time outing in 2013 in the previous race, was reported again. At IndyCar test drives in Sonoma two weeks before the race, Ryō Hirakawa came to his first IndyCar test in this vehicle.
With Will Power (twice), Tony Kanaan , Marco Andretti , Dixon, Castroneves, Dario Franchitti and Ryan Briscoe (once each), seven former winners competed in this Grand Prix.
Kanaan made his 211th IndyCar start in a row at this Grand Prix. So he drew level with his team boss and previous sole record holder Jimmy Vasser in the all-time best list .
training
In the first practice session, Hunter-Reay set the fastest time ahead of Castroneves and Franchitti. The two returnees Briscoe and Hildebrand immediately made it back into the top 10 in fifth and ninth respectively. In his first official IndyCar outing, Luhr finished last, 2.2 seconds behind Hunter-Reay. In the second practice session, Dixon set the fastest time on Friday. Behind him are Penske pilots Castroneves and Power. Luhr was again in last place, 2.3 seconds behind. After the training, several pilots expressed their surprise at the relatively quick release of the Blacks , the harder tire compound. The only red flag triggered Briscoe with a ride.
In the third practice session, Franchitti undercut the fastest lap. He set the fastest time ahead of Hunter-Reay and Sébastien Bourdais . Luhr was no longer in last place, but was still 2.2 seconds behind the leader. At the time when Franchitti was setting the fastest lap, all the other drivers were more than a second behind him. At the end of the training, the first 14 drivers were within a second.
Qualifying
Due to a change in wind direction, the route had to be driven differently than in the previous training session.
The first part of the time training was held in two groups. The six fastest drivers in each group came into the second segment. The remaining starting positions were determined from the result of the first qualifying segment, with the drivers in the first group being assigned the odd positions from 13 and the drivers in the second group the even positions from 14. Power drove the fastest lap in the first group, while Franchitti was the fastest driver in the second group.
In the second segment of the qualification, the six fastest drivers qualified for the final section. Power achieved the fastest lap time. Next to him, Dixon, Franchitti, Charlie Kimball , Hunter-Reay and Castroneves made it into the third part of qualifying, the so-called Firestone Fast Six . Franchitti used the same set of softer tire compounds in the second part of qualifying as in the first and was therefore the only driver with a fresh set of tires for the final section.
Franchitti finally set the fastest time and took pole position ahead of Dixon and Power.
Davison was moved ten positions back due to an early engine change.
Final training
In the final practice session before the race, Dixon was the fastest. Hunter-Reay and Andretti followed in the places behind him. Davison did not take part due to a short-term engine change.
run
At the start, Castroneves and Kimball touched in the second corner. Kimball stalled his vehicle and triggered a yellow phase. Josef Newgarden pitted with transmission problems, but drove on. At the restart, Bourdais lost his front wing. A few laps later, EJ Viso and Justin Wilson collided and triggered another yellow phase. In the early stages, Franchitti led the race ahead of his teammate Dixon.
The third caution occurred in the 17th lap after Bourdais Simona de Silvestro had turned around in the seventh corner. With the exception of Hunter-Reay, all the drivers in the leading group pitted, so Hunter-Reay took the lead from Wilson. At the restart, Hunter-Reay kept the lead and Kimball passed him and came back into the lead lap. After Andretti, Simon Pagenaud and Graham Rahal wanted to go through the third corner as a three in midfield and Rahal fell back, Kanaan drove into Hildebrand in the seventh corner and turned him. This triggered the fourth yellow phase. Shortly before, Dixon had driven past Franchitti. Hunter-Reay pitted and handed the lead to Wilson. While Wilson kept the lead at the restart, there were several duels in the field. Power passed Franchitti into third position, James Hinchcliffe was pushed into the run-off zone by Sebastián Saavedra . On the 29th lap, James Jakes retired with an engine failure and triggered the fifth caution period. In addition to him, except for Newgarden and Takuma Satō , who were several laps behind with technical problems, all drivers were in the lead lap.
Wilson, who had older tires, lost the lead at the restart to Dixon and Power and pitted a little later. Around halfway through the race, the second pit stop phase began under green flags. Power stopped one lap ahead of Dixon and stayed just behind Dixon. Shortly thereafter, Power was overtaken by Wilson after a brake. Due to pit stops, Kanaan and then Hinchcliffe took the lead for a few laps before Dixon got it back on lap 55. At this point he was leading the race ahead of Wilson, Power, Franchitti, Andretti, Castroneves, Pagenaud, de Silvestro and Briscoe.
While Hinchcliffe worked his way forward on fresh tires and took fifth position on lap 60, Wilson, de Silvestro and Hunter-Reay pitted for their last stop. A little later, Newgarden, who had gearbox problems, stopped and triggered the sixth caution phase of the race. In this, the rest of the drivers pitted for their last stop. Dixon, whose box was directly behind Powers, touched the rear right tire carrier of Powers crew when driving off , which collided with the Jack-Man as a result of the impact . Both mechanics were uninjured and quickly got up again. Dixon had driven through the Powers Box area, which led to an investigation by race officials.
At the restart, Dixon kept the lead, but was given a drive-through penalty because the race management blamed him for the incident at the pits. The penalty dropped Dixon to 21st place, while Power took the lead ahead of Wilson and Franchitti. Dixon and his race director Mike Hull criticized the penalty after the race, blamed the tire carrier for the collision and accused him of deliberately blocking the way. Penske race director Tim Cindric explained that the mechanic behaved the same way at the two previous stops as he did at the third.
On the 78th lap, an incident in the seventh corner triggered the last caution period of the race. Briscoe touched Kimball, who collided with Satō and Ed Carpenter while driving off . All drivers drove on, Satō gave up a little later at the pits. At the restart, Wilson tried to drive past Power, but was unsuccessful. Dixon, however, worked his way up to 15th place. While Luhr gave up the race with four laps to go, Saavedra hit the lane in the ninth corner after coming into contact with Davison. Saavedra's accident did not trigger a yellow phase. Yellow flags were only shown locally in the area of the accident site.
Power won the race with it. It was his first win since the Indy in São Paulo in April 2012. Wilson finished second ahead of Franchitti, Andretti and Pagenaud. Hunter-Reay, Castroneves, Hinchcliffe, de Silvestro and Bourdais completed the top 10.
Castroneves took advantage of the penalty against Dixon and extended his lead over him. The first three positions in the championship remained unchanged.
Registration list
