Parish church of St. Pankratius

The Church of St. Pankratius is the parish church of Telfes in Stubai , Tyrol. She belongs to the deanery Matrei am Brenner in the diocese of Innsbruck . It is a listed building

architecture

Today's parish church of St. Pankratius was built from 1754 to 1756 by the Tyrolean church builder and priest Franz de Paula Penz . The magnificent building impresses on the outside with the high tower, which dates back to 1626, as well as the bright, friendly interior, a typical feature of all works by the builder.

The nave consists of two yokes, a retracted front yoke and a correspondingly retracted choir with a semicircular end. The transept is poorly developed. The roofs of the individual components are separated from each other and thus reflect the structure of the overall system. The facade on the nave and transept is biaxial and decorated with painted pilasters, window frames and longitudinal stripes under the cornice. It was restored from 1976 to 1979. The fresco above the arched main portal in the west facade shows St. Pankratius as protector of the village, which can be grasped here in its oldest view. Like the interior frescoes, it comes from Anton Zoller from Telfs (Oberinntal), was later painted over and was only uncovered again in 1930. Like those of the two side portals on the south side, the door leaves still bear the original carving. Above the rear side entrance is a magnificent sundial with putti in the rich frame, also by Anton Zoller, probably designed by Peter Anich . It shows hours and half-hours, day lengths, sun elevations in degrees and minutes as well as monthly and zodiac curves.

tower

The tower on the north side is 63 meters high, has painted corner cuboids and round-arched double acoustic windows, which are combined by a blind arch, plus an additional acoustic window in each of the four gables of the pointed helmet, which is covered with red shingles. With six bronze bells, the ringing is tuned in B, d, f, g, b, d´ and, with one exception, dates from the time after the Second World War. The exception is the "big one" with a weight of around 2800 kilograms, it was consecrated in 1922 and continues the tradition of older, famous Telfer weather bells. The entire bell system had to be replaced in 1995 as a result of considerable damage to the building structure (mainly cracks) both on the tower and on the church (vault) by technical measures (e.g. attaching counterweights to the bell yokes, installing special reversion clappers, reducing the Läutewinkels) can be restricted in its bells, which are usual for Tyrolean conditions (now without the clapper). All bells can be operated electronically or are subject to automatic ringing programs.

Interior

The interior of the church draws its main decoration from the large ceiling frescoes by Anton Zoller  (1757), which he created with the help of his son Josef Anton Zoller . Opposite them, the stucco, popular in other Penzkirchen, is limited to the capitals of the pilasters and the window crowns. The main fresco in the crossing, where the country house and transept intersect and form a flat, oval dome, is particularly impressive because of its illusion of depth. In terms of size and quality, it is Zoller's most important work and shows the handing over of the rosary by Don Juan de Austria to the Pope after the victory over the Turks in the sea battle of Lepanto. The rosary festival on the first Sunday in October is still traditionally celebrated in Telfes with a solemn procession. The main fresco of the ship depicts the execution of the parish and church patron Pankratius in a moving scene. He is also commemorated every year by a procession on a Sunday around his feast day on May 12th. The choir fresco shows the worship of the Eucharist. The medallions of the twelve apostles on the pilasters also come from Zoller.

The altars were redesigned several times. In 1863 a fire destroyed the high altar and sacristy after a lightning strike. In the course of the restoration, the main altar and the two side altars with wooden reliefs in Nazarene style were renewed by Dominikus Trenkwalder .

In 1956/57 the church was restored under Pastor Thomas Walch according to plans by Clemens Holzmeister . He replaced the Trenkwalder altars with parts of the old stock: on the high altar a crucifixion group, which, like many other altar sculptures in the Stubai , is attributed to the Tyrolean baroque sculptor Johann Perger . The side altars received the old altar leaves by Zoller again, on the right the baroque bones of the martyr Facundus , which were transferred from Brixen to Telfes in 1761, are kept in a glass shrine . Remnants of the replaced high altar by Trenkwalder stand at the back left under the gallery as a rosary altar.

In the course of this interior restoration, the windows, which have become increasingly rich and decorated in a colorful mix of styles over time, were replaced by those with simple glass. Only above the gallery are neo-Gothic glass windows from the Tyrolean glass painting establishment in Innsbruck from the period 1870/80.

The Stations of the Cross by Jakob Jenewein are from 1733/34 ; The processional figures in the glass cases on the side walls of the ship are also baroque : on the left, Christ on the scourge column and as the Man of Sorrows, on the right, the Queen of Heaven and St. Isidore, who enjoyed special veneration in Telfes. On the wall of the left transept is a larger than life, contemporary statue of the Sacred Heart of Jesus by Hans Buchgeschwenter from 1946.

In the years from 2004 to 2006, on the initiative of diocesan curator Rudolf Silberberger, who was also the pastor in charge of Telfes at the time, the chancel was completely redesigned, the baroque high altar was reconstructed and the existing crucifixion group was incorporated into the concept.

organ

The parish church houses one of the largest preserved organs by Franz Weber from Oberperfuss , which was built in 1865 with 24  registers . Like the entire church, it is a listed building and was renovated in 1989.
