Anton Zoller (born March 21, 1695 in Telfs , † April 16, 1768 in Hall in Tirol ) was an Austrian baroque painter .

Life

Anton Zoller did an apprenticeship with the court painter Franz Michael Hueber in Innsbruck and was soon involved in the production of theater decorations for the court. In 1721/22 he took part in a commission from Huebers to decorate the Bernhardisaal in Stams monastery ; the fresco with the blessing of St. Bernhard on bread bears his signature. After completing his apprenticeship, he went on a journey through Austria and southern Germany and studied from 1726 to 1728 at the Imperial Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna . He then came to Carinthia at the invitation of the Jesuits . There he made theater decorations for their dramas and painted paintings in Trabuschgen Castle in Obervellach on behalf of the Barons von Stampfer . Presumably in 1729 he married the daughter of the market judge of Obervellach, Maria Theresia Widmayr. In 1730 the first son, Josef Anton Zoller , was born in Klagenfurt . In total, the couple had eight children, only four of whom reached adulthood. The youngest son, Franz Karl Zoller , became an engraver and poet. Zoller had close ties to Josef Ferdinand Fromiller and may have worked with him.

Around 1740 Zoller was commissioned to decorate the parish church in Telfs with frescoes and an altarpiece. Since he had better prospects as a church painter in Tyrol, he tried since 1744 to obtain citizenship in Hall. This was granted to him in 1753 and he moved to Hall with his family. In the following time he created numerous altarpieces and frescoes for churches in Tyrol, often for buildings erected by Franz de Paula Penz , such as in Telfes im Stubai , Schmirn or Gschnitz . Many frescoes were created in collaboration with his son Josef Anton, who was initially his student and assistant. Typical of Zoller's work is the emphasis on details, a preference for asymmetrical architectural elements and illusionistic cloud formations.
