The 2013 Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach took place on April 21 at the Long Beach Grand Prix Circuit in Long Beach , California , United States and was the third race of the 2013 IndyCar Series season . It was the 39th Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach.

Reports

backgrounds

After the Honda Indy Grand Prix of Alabama , Hélio Castroneves led the drivers' standings with 9 points on Scott Dixon and 13 points on Ryan Hunter-Reay .

At the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach, the drivers were allowed a total of 170 seconds to use the push-to-pass button. The overtaking aid could be activated ten times during the race.

The tire regulations were adapted for the Long Beach Grand Prix. Every driver who drives more than five laps in the first training session receives an additional set of the harder tire compound for this training session.

Mike Conway returned to the IndyCar Series at this Grand Prix. He received a cockpit at Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing , who used an additional vehicle. Conway had ended his motorsport career on ovals after the Grand Prix of Baltimore in 2012 , and was therefore without a full-time cockpit for the 2013 season.

Dario Franchitti started the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach for the 250th time in an IndyCar race.

With Sébastien Bourdais (three times), Will Power (twice), Castroneves, Franchitti, Hunter-Reay and Conway (once each), six winners competed in this Grand Prix.

training

In the first practice session, James Hinchcliffe drove the fastest lap ahead of Conway and Takuma Satō . Shortly before the end of training, Josef Newgarden triggered a red flag by sliding straight ahead into Turn 9 at the end of the back straight. The second training was interrupted four times. Sebastián Saavedra drove into the emergency exit at turn 6 because he had braked himself. There he turned his vehicle and drove back onto the track into the boundary. The second interruption was triggered by Justin Wilson , who drove into the tire wall in the eighth corner. Simona de Silvestro , who was directly behind Wilson, could no longer evade and drove Wilson into the stern. Dixon was responsible for the third interruption, who lost control of his vehicle at Turn 9 and hit the lane with his left side. In doing so, he damaged both left suspensions. The last interruption triggered an accident by EJ Viso . Hunter-Reay was the fastest pilot ahead of Conway and Power.

In the third training session, Simon Pagenaud set the fastest time ahead of Power and Conway. Red flags triggered Power and Castroneves in this training session. Power resumed training after repairing the rear wing.

Qualifying

The first part of the time training was held in two groups. The six fastest drivers in each group came into the second segment. The remaining starting positions were determined from the result of the first qualifying segment, with the drivers in the first group being assigned the odd positions from 13 and the drivers in the second group the even positions from 14. In the first group Franchitti drove the fastest lap, in the second group Power was the fastest driver. In the second group, Dixon spun, which impeded Oriol Servià . First, both pilots were penalized by canceling the two fastest laps. After a protest, the race management lifted the penalty against Servià. In addition, Marco Andretti 's two fastest laps were canceled because he blocked JR Hildebrand .

In the second segment of the qualification, the six fastest drivers qualified for the final section. Conway achieved the fastest lap time. In addition to him, Power, Franchitti, Hunter-Reay, Satō and Castroneves made it into the third part of qualifying, the so-called Firestone Fast Six .

Franchitti finally set the fastest time and took pole position ahead of Hunter-Reay and Power.

Tristan Vautier was moved back ten starting positions due to an early engine change.

Final training

In the final training session on Sunday morning, Satō was the fastest driver ahead of Newgarden and Viso.

run

Franchitti retained the lead at takeoff from Hunter-Reay, Satō, Power and Hinchcliffe. There was a collision between Dixon and Vautier further back. Dixon damaged the front wing and went to the pits. A little later, Saavedra had an accident on turn 10. This triggered a yellow phase.

When restarting, Castroneves drove into the stern of Conway in the fountain section. Then Castroneves had to pits for a repair stop. The race went without incident until Charlie Kimball and Alex Tagliani collided on lap 30. Kimball missed the braking point and dragged Tagliani, who was on the outside, into the tire wall. The collision triggered a yellow phase. Both pilots resumed the race. Shortly before, Franchitti had pitted under green and had given the lead to Power. In the yellow phase, the other pilots completed their pit stops and Satō took the lead in front of Power, Franchitti, Conway and Graham Rahal . Power had problems with the harder tire compound he was now using and gradually lost positions.

There was a collision shortly after the restart. Hinchcliffe missed the braking point for the first corner and collided first with Tony Kanaan and then with his teammate Viso. This collision ended Hinchcliffe's race immediately, Viso stood in the pits for a long time and later completed a few more laps. Shortly after the restart, Conway gave up with electronics problems.

Satō continued to lead the race. On the 50th lap, Hunter-Reay missed the braking point in the eighth corner when lapping Beatriz and was eliminated. The accident triggered a yellow phase during which the drivers made their final pit stops. An incident occurred in the pit lane. Vautier was let off too early by his crew so that he collided with the power turning in front of him. Power came back to the pits for repairs a lap later. As a result, Power lost further positions. Vautier was given a drive-through penalty for the collision. During the yellow phase, AJ Allmendinger gave up with a gearbox failure.

At the restart Satō defended the lead and kept it until the end of the race. Shortly before the end of the race, there was a collision between Kanaan and Servià in the first corner. The two pilots were in fifth and sixth at the time. While Kanaan was eliminated, Servià continued. Servià was initially given a 30-second time penalty for avoidable contact, but the race management lifted this again. Kanaan injured his right hand in the accident. He suffered a torn ligament. The race ended under yellow.

Satō eventually scored his first victory in the 52nd IndyCar race. This also made him the first Japanese IndyCar winner. For AJ Foyt Enterprises it was the first IndyCar win since the Ameristar Casino Indy 200 2002 . There Airton Daré won for the racing team. The team's last win on a non-oval course was achieved by AJ Foyt at the 1978 Daily Empress Indy Silverstone . It was also the first victory for Satō in more than ten years. He last won the Macau Grand Prix in 2001 . Team owner AJ Foyt was absent due to health problems.

Rahal finished second ahead of Wilson and Franchitti. Wilson, who had started from 24th place, had passed Franchitti in the closing stages. For the first time in the season, only Honda drivers were on the podium. Hildebrand, Servià, Andretti, Pagenaud, de Silvestro and Castroneves completed the top 10 by a larger margin. For the first time in his career, Power did not achieve a top 10 position in Long Beach.

In the overall standings, Castroneves kept the lead. Satō took second place and displaced Dixon to third place.
