background
With an unchanged driver line-up compared to the South African Grand Prix around a month earlier, Formula 1 entered the city race in Long Beach.
With the exception of Emerson Fittipaldi , who relied on the more sophisticated F5A , all teams competed with their wing cars, which were current at the time. The A3 , designed for ground effect, made its debut at Team Merzario ; however, it was only used in qualifying. After the A3 suffered a suspension damage during training, the short-term repair of which was considered too risky, team boss Arturo Merzario contested the race with the interim model A1B , which was not yet a wing car.
training
Gilles Villeneuve reached pole position with the Ferrari 312T4 alongside his former teammate Carlos Reutemann in the Lotus 79 . Jody Scheckter qualified for third place on the grid in the second Ferrari. This was followed by the two Ligier JS11 by Patrick Depailler and Jacques Laffite .
While at Brabham with starting positions 11 and 12 for Niki Lauda and Nelson Piquet there was at least a slight upward trend, McLaren drivers John Watson and Patrick Tambay found themselves in starting positions 18 and 19, which are disappointing for their standards.
Jean-Pierre Jabouille had an accident with his Renault RS01 during practice and was therefore unable to compete. Since the cause of the accident was initially unknown and a technical defect as such could not be ruled out, it was decided, for safety reasons, not to let the second Renault works driver René Arnoux compete.
run
After several unsuccessful attempts to start, which came about because pole setter Villeneuve missed his starting position, Clay Regazzoni had to start from the pit lane due to an electrical fault and Laffite spun on the grid, Villeneuve took the lead after several minutes of delay in front of Depailler and Scheckter. Jan Lammers collided with Patrick Tambay further down the field . His Shadow lost contact with the ground and then collided with Niki Laudas Brabham.
On the ninth lap, Jean-Pierre Jarier took second place behind Villeneuve, having overtaken Scheckter and Depailler on the previous laps. On the following lap, Scheckter passed Depailler and caught up with Jarier, whom he finally overtook on lap 27 and thus established a Ferrari double lead. The third-placed Jarier then came under pressure from Patrick Depailler, Alan Jones and Mario Andretti , who overtook him on laps 44 to 46 one after the other.
On the 62nd lap, Jones passed Depailler. In the final phase of the race, he dropped to fifth place behind Andretti and in front of Jarier, as a transmission problem prevented him.
Didier Pironi and Hans-Joachim Stuck were disqualified for using outside help after they had let themselves be pushed as a result of turning.
