Reports
background
The Alfa-Romeo -Werksteam Autodelta returned in time for the home Grand Prix back to the participants. Vittorio Brambilla was hired as the second driver to drive the Alfa Romeo 177 . Regular driver Bruno Giacomelli drove the new 179 for the first time .
At Ensign Racing , Patrick Gaillard was replaced by Formula 1 debutant Marc Surer . Héctor Rebaque , who had previously always operated his team as a Lotus customer team, was the first to use his own car called the Rebaque HR100 .
training
On the high-speed track at Monza, the turbo-powered Renault achieved first and second starting positions thanks to their performance advantage, with Jean-Pierre Jabouille being around 1.2 tenths of a second faster than his teammate René Arnoux . The two rows behind were each composed of a Ferrari and a Williams driver, namely Jody Scheckter and Alan Jones as well as Gilles Villeneuve and Clay Regazzoni .
Due to the larger number of participants compared to the previous races, four pilots failed to qualify for one of the 24 starting positions.
run
Since the Renault were hindered at the start by the so-called turbo lag , as usual , Scheckter took the lead in the Ferrari 312T4 . Behind Arnoux and Villeneuve, Jacques Laffite followed in fourth place after a good start, while Alan Jones fell back to the bottom of the field.
In the second lap, Arnoux took the lead from Scheckter, but from then on could not break away from his four direct pursuers. Only between the fifth-placed Jabouille and the sixth-placed Regazzoni did a small gap open up.
On lap 13, Arnoux dropped out of the leading group due to a misfire and had to retire one lap later. After Jabouille and Laffite had also retired due to technical difficulties, Clay Regazzoni ultimately took third place behind the two Ferrari drivers who, with a double victory in the Ferrari home race, secured both the constructors 'title and the drivers' world title for Jody Scheckter. The other World Cup points of the day were secured by Niki Lauda , Mario Andretti and Jean-Pierre Jarier .
Jody Scheckter was at the height of his career by winning the world championship. He then achieved neither another victory nor another podium finish.
