Reports
background
Even before the third to last World Championship round of the season, there were no signs of a preliminary decision in the fight for the World Championship. With Clay Regazzoni , Jody Scheckter , Niki Lauda and Emerson Fittipaldi , there were still four candidates who had realistic chances for the title.
A field of drivers that was largely unchanged compared to the Austrian Grand Prix three weeks earlier was reported for the race weekend in Monza. One of the few changes was the renewed deployment of José Dolhem as a Surtees factory driver instead of Jean-Pierre Jabouille . In addition, the Brabham of the private team Scuderia Finotto was again awarded to a local guest starter. It was Carlo Facetti , who was entered for a Grand Prix for the first and only time. The team had also reported another car for Frenchman Jean-Louis Lafosse . This message was rejected by the organizers in advance.
In addition, the irregular team Chris Amon Racing was back at the start. BRM again competed with the usual line-up with three works cars.
training
For the second time in a row, the training times resulted in a first row consisting of the Ferrari 312B3 of the now nine-time pole-setter Niki Lauda and Brabham works driver Carlos Reutemann . This was followed by Carlos Pace and John Watson , who was allowed to use the works team's T-Car after an accident with his usual customer Brabham , and two more Brabham BT44s . The third row consisted of the title candidates Regazzoni and Fittipaldi. This was followed by Ronnie Peterson , James Hunt , Jean-Pierre Jarier and Patrick Depailler . The fourth opponent in the championship fight, Jody Scheckter qualified for twelfth place, while again six pilots failed to qualify because the starting field was limited to 25 vehicles by the organizer.
run
During the first lap the order of the first places remained constant. In the second lap, Watson was overtaken by Regazzoni, who also passed Pace and Reutemann in the following laps and added Lauda's top position to a Ferrari one-two lead, which was acclaimed by the large numbers of spectators.
The three Brabhams, all of which were in a promising position, either dropped out completely or at least hopelessly for the time being due to technical problems. This brought Peterson to third place and Fittipaldi and Scheckter also to the points.
This order remained unchanged until the 30th round. Then Lauda's engine began to smoke and it slowed down. Regazzoni took over the lead and Lauda had to retire shortly afterwards. From then on, the Swiss led for ten laps before he retired due to a comparable engine failure. From then on, Peterson then dueled with Fittipaldi for twelve laps, but withstood this pressure and crossed the finish line just before the Brazilian. It was the last Grand Prix victory achieved with the Lotus 72 , the basic design of which came from the 1970 season . Scheckter came third ahead of Arturo Merzario , who showed a convincing performance in front of the home crowd in the Iso-Marlboro of the Frank Williams Racing Cars team . Carlos Pace and Denis Hulme received the last World Cup points of the day.
Furthermore, there was no preliminary decision in the title fight. The three leaders in the world championship standings even moved closer together thanks to the race result. Only Niki Lauda lost touch, but still had mathematical chances.
